Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

I just had a chat with a guy who knows people in the Marner camp and said he is pretty sure he is going to the sharks on a massive deal. His camp doesn't like the pressure cooker here and would rather be in a non traditional market. Let's see if my friend is correct July 2nd or sooner.

Yeah, because they're leaking that info to some random nobody.

And for them to have figured that out already would be tampering because he is still under contract to the Leafs. So instead of believing nobodies claiming to have info, use some common sense.

It took 8 years and a very favourable 1st round match up for this to happen
More accurately, it took some very unfavourable circumstances to not happen a lot sooner.
Every team that wins the cup gets some favourable breaks.
However, they still haven't accomplished enough to say, after all this time, that it was the right way to sign players or build a team. How could you, given how much time was lost?
Because the answer to that isn't determined by contextless playoff outcomes.
And even by your own admission, they're getting some pretty favourable goaltending from the other side. So, what happens when Bob seals the net up, or even provides average goaltending?
Unless Woll more than matches it, we lose, because that's the strategy we're going with for some reason.

Exactly. Which meant they preferred Marner, for whatever reason.

The fact that Tre liked the idea enough to approach Marner about waiving his NMC meant he preferred Rantanen, for whatever reason.

I agree - this isn't complicated at all.
I think the reason was that Rantanen wasn't going to sign a UFA deal with them and they wanted to get something for him. I doubt very much that they preferred Marner over him...it's just better to have Marner than absolutely nothing (even they got Stankhoven and some picks). Marner is 99% gone IMO. He never says he wants to be here and the contract talks are a distraction. He just says he doesn't want to talk about it...big difference.

We shall see...it's called speculation for a reason.

Yes, that was a possible reason I had suggested too.

Tampering happens all the time. I don’t disagree with you but you would be naive to believe tampering isn’t happening.

It's really more like Rielly = Rielly and Tanev = Brodie, and then looking at the differences between Muzzin/McCabe and Carlo/Holl. But I know many still heavily underrate what Holl brought, especially during his peak in 2020/21, so we will likely never agree.

But it's still the same overall. Also, Brodie was left handed, but he played RD. There have been plenty of cup winners and strong defensive teams without an equal handedness split in their top 4D.

Mentioning that he's a right shot defenseman does not equal that being the main reason we got him. He literally mentions multiple more important reasons in the same quote. Obviously all else equal, you'd prefer the handedness you have less of, but this fanbase has really exaggerated the importance. And again, we have the same number of left and right as we used to, and if anything, OEL seems to be more affected by playing on his off side than our past players.

Yeah that is usually how it goes. People create scapegoats by exaggerating specific instances. Sandin didn't have a great series, but I think you're really underestimating how many mistakes your average bottom pairing defenseman makes.

If it is, then that means we have issues somewhere else, because we're not getting the best defensive results.

You can't undervalue what a brings when that player brings nothing.

Justin Holl was 2 things.

#1 the guy that cost them Jared McCann in in the expansion draft which was incredibly stupid, arguably the most stupid thing Dubas ever did, and It's only arguable because he also gift wrapped Colorado Kadri.

#2 he was a mistake machine, and not regular mistakes, game costing mistakes.

When he f***ed up he f***ED UP.

If the team doesn't advance, treating Marner as an own rental to get to the second round has got to be the biggest blunder in quite some time for this organization.
NMC which I think Dubas gave to Marner 2 years before UFA (I think it began a month after Pizza man got hired) + marner saying no to rantanen deal made that a reality

The pizza man tried to trade marner but it didnt work
