Treliving in doing a good job getting us out from under the stench that was a Clueless Kyle Dubas.

We have a proven Stanley Cup winning coach not an OHL coach, and this is the best goaltending with Woll and Stolarz that we have seen in a decade, which leaves real room for optimism.

Leaf cap heavy core 4 still hangs like a boat anchor around the Leafs success and will live and die by them, but this is the last year of have 4 X $11 mil or greater players on the same roster.

An Increase to the Salary Cap by +$5 mil and cut JT bloated overpaid contract in 1/2, and this is going to open real opportunities for Treliving now with Cap space to start build a true Cup contender not a pretender.

The days of Leafs playing pond hockey and trying to outscore their mistakes is already being replaced by a solid system better prepared for playoff hockey so we're moving in the right direction. We're no longer a butter soft team, but one that will be willing to stand up and fight back as needed.

Now only if Treliving would just sign pending UFA power forward Mikko Rantanen to the same relative money it would cost to re-sign Mitch Marner and you're bringing in a proven playoff warrior. Use the savings on the Tavares contract to sign Jonathan Toews and get us a TOP 4 true NHL defender and we will be on our way. :)

Knies --- Matthews -- Rantanen
Tavares - Toews ------Nylander
...this is the only year of 4 players making 11m each, no?

So bizarre that a guy who constantly complained about being too top heavy wants to go right back to it by signing Rantanen

The goaltending and defense are better then they have been in years. And in the case of the defense literal decades.

But he's destroying the team.

I wonder if you think your idol is destroying the Pens

Eastern Conference standings with Leafs current GM in BLUE and Leafs former GM in Green.

Pretty easy to tell which GM is destroying his team and thank goodness it NOT our current one. :wg:

If any GM in the East is getting fired I'm going all in on the clueless one now running the Pittsburgh Pens into the ground.

That first line is nice.

That second one is shocking. Poor Nylander.

He's not going anywhere either because he signed a 7 year deal.

IMHO, at this point, I believe Treliving is just a Shanahan puppet. He appears to me to be sitting on his hands making little to no attempts to seriously upgrade our Leafs to REAL Stanley Cup contenders.

Our Leafs need a TRUE number D, and, a very competitive number 2 C. Failing to acquire BOTH of these will mean more of the same as we've been gifted for the last 8 seasons.

Standing pat with our current core 5 WILL NOT get the job done. One or more have to be traded for REAL upgrades.

Right or wrong, I stand by my assessment. This core 5 needs to be DOMINATING and winning games against the bubble teams, and quite frankly, more often than I'd like, they're losing to teams they should be easily beating.

We shall see if this post of mine ages well or not!!!

JMHO.

Easier said than done this team needs too much he can tweak in season but he always says the heavy lifting gets done in the off season I saw we punt the year we’re depleted

I think you guys are putting too much stock into the name on the GM placard...

The players play the games at the end of the day, and the core is the same.
The roster's hardly different in composition or talent.

Dubas didn't ruin the team. He managed a team that set club records.
Trelivng isn't ruining the team. He's riding par with the same core of players, focusing ever so slightly more on D.

You guys would argue the shade of green on the money if you won the lottery together

Our defensive play has actually been horrible. The best in decades came under the previous GM, and we've downgraded pretty significantly since. We have put up the 23rd best defensive results in the league this year. We are allowing 3.15 xGA/60, which is the second worst of the Matthews era, behind only last year's 3.17 (also under Treliving).

Offensively, we rank lower than we ever have (12th) and are scoring less goals than we have since 2016-2017, when league scoring was lower. This is also the worst we've ever ranked in offensive chance generation (11th).

Our goaltending this year ranks 5th, which has largely saved our season. But while Stolarz has had a great 18 games, it's nothing we haven't seen in a small sample before, and the majority of our GSAx is from Woll, who wasn't from Treliving. He was drafted by Lou, and signed to an amazing deal by Dubas. Treliving just got the benefit of existing when he was developed and ready.

We're on pace for our worst record in the past half decade, and we're putting up the worst underlying metrics in the Matthews era.

I don't have an idol. You're the one creating a thread to idolize a GM. The Penguins are irrelevant, and the only thing destroying them is age, which nobody escapes. Your whataboutisms are a deflection from the real issue. That by any objective evaluation, Treliving is in fact not "doing a great job".

Even IF you arguably end up at the correct takeaway, expected stats are garbage and always have been

The new president may keep him, but a lot of times they hire their own GM.

Change the CEO and those below would freshen their CV's.

If this is another playoffs disaster, and they've been disasters, there will be changes made.

A review of the past couple years would not indicate "safe."

Treliving has signed: (correct me if I've missed any / or included incorrectly)

Kampf
Reaves
Nylander
Matthews
Paccioretty
Domi
Liljegren
McMann
Dewar
Robertson
Holmberg
Lorentz
Tanev
Ekman-Larsson
McCabe
Benoit
Myers
Hakanpaa
Stolarz
Woll

So this is his team.

Yeah, easily Pelley could want to clean house if they have another playoffs disaster.

I thought there would have been changes after last year but alas not to be

Not to change the topic, but I am continually amazed to see people blame Dubas for Pittsburgh's decline. It was going to happen no matter Dubas or anyone else did.

While perhaps the Leafs present is better, certainly looks like the Penguins are loading up for a rebuild.

Crosby, Malkin, Letang getting to ride off into the sunset perhaps just a respect and reward for the Cups they've won.

...

For Treliving to make any substantive move is going to be difficult, but if he's keeping assets for the future, he might want to rethink that strategy.

Even as incompetent that Dubas was for the Leafs you can’t totally put Pitts problems on him but I’m betting he will have no idea how to fix them

They don't inherently indicate anything. They are a just a tool for accurately evaluating shot generation and prevention, in both quantity and quality, for all teams.

You are not selling them as useful.

Collecting data that has no value is a waste of resources.

"Oh that's nice." Now throw it away and let's look at something we can address.

I don’t understand why not being impressed with the job Treliving has done means that you think Dubas is excellent. In reality, both have their flaws.

I’m sorry but I’m really underwhelmed with Treliving. I didn’t like the process when we hired him (basically nobody else was considered judging from what the insiders said), and I haven’t liked the job he has done. I give him credit for OEL, Stolarz, Tanev, and Bertuzzi.

Kampf was a bad signing, Domi a bad signing. Reaves a bad signing. Klingberg a bad signing. Hakanpaa a bad signing.

He has made no trades of consequences, just seems content to twiddle his thumbs as we become more mid year after year.

As it stands, our goalies are better, one he signed, one he inherited. Our defence is better, but not significantly so, (and it’s old), and our forwards are worse.

I don’t understand why people claim he’s been amazing. I would say he’s been slightly below average. Not terrible, but not great either.

Trading for Karlsson and signing Jarry to a terrible contract sure won’t help
Karlsson will be done same time as Crosby and Malkin.

Just mental gymnastics, or the other mental ...

Not that he will, but you could still retrieve assets for Karlsson with retention.

I'm not sure anyone thought it was a great move, but it was at least an attempt to make a difference.
