I have no idea why we all of a sudden became a fanbase that constantly makes excuses for these guys, but I'm glad it's finally changing.

Brad used the word I have used multiple times when referring to this team..."DNA". They don't have it in sufficient quantities and I identified this as early as prior to the series against Columbus.
After the Montreal series it was so abundantly clear that one would be well supported in suggesting that this has been the worst managed team this decade. That had to be the most obvious barometer but perhaps some people just wanted to safely keep their jobs by doing just enough to give the Dumb & Dumber response "there's a chance".
For some time I suggested that Marner would never win a Cup in Toronto, though I firmly believe that Rielly should have been replaced even before Marner. A couple of nice guys. Sometimes Rielly even showed some passion. Both need a change of scenery and both the players and team would benefit.
My guess is that if the cap space spent on Marner and Rielly would have been allocated to other horses that this team would have had at least a Cup Final during this decade. Perhaps even this year...

I love how when Shanny & Dubas took over their entire MO was keeping the core 'safe and protected', they absolutely coddled these guys. Gave them all the money, whatever term they wanted, then you wonder why it failed? They never had to grow up, it's Peter Pan syndrome with our top guys.

Ya, he was coming off a 35 point in 52 game season while get prime PP chances and 2 points in 4 games in the playoffs.
You should learn how a calendar works so you can check what his last season was before he signed.

Don't forget players like McMann, Reeves and Laughton who also will be free agents.
There is definite dollars to keep both Matthews and McDavid if that opportunity arises.
Ya one can hope. I love Mo, and I appreciate his desire to be a Leaf, but we need a better look on the back end at this point

My guess is that had Dubas not been fired in 2023, he would have moved off the core before the NMC kicked in.
That doesn't mean we would have been better though - had he, for example, traded Marner to San Jose for Erik Karlsson like he did as soon as he got to Pittsburgh, would the Leafs have been better off? Unlikely.

He's tied for 3rd in EVP currently.
2nd over the last 3 years in EVP in fewer games than most players.
And tied for 6th in PPG over the same 3 years (min 10 games).
No worries, continue posting nonsense.. RNH didn't take some insane deal, he didn't have great production and had a beneficial situation, sorry you don't follow the sport.

vs fla: 1st 3 games (4 points +2) last 4 games(0 points - 2)
not to mention he literally lost us game 3 single handedly, and was the worst player on the ice in game 7.

Okay, but for myself, I don't think Treliving is any better.
Slow aging Dcore and likely to try to fix most of the problems up front with bloated, terrible contracts up front, and now he's talking about the "DNA." Yeah, signing Bennett isn't going to change the DNA.
The DNA is also the system and style that allows you to get bullied on home ice and get out-chanced 21-0 in the most important game of the year, and that's him and Berube, not KD and Shanny now.
How does Tanev get hit 107 times? Maybe it's because the defence is too slow and the coach still thinks he has Pietrangelo, Boumeester, and Parayko, and sets the teams out the same way with this McCabe-Tanev stuff?
Is that part of the DNA going to change? Because I think it should.
The DNA analogy is stupid anyway, and pretty naive to think that he hasn't put his stamp on the team over the past 2 years.

I was quite animated on here that we NOT try to get Karlsson. When it was reported that he had tried to trade for him but the deal fell through I was relieved.
Brad, Craig and Leafs upper management/ownership seem to be forging a close bond. I think this is critical at this juncture.
I am also glad that Brad is taking his time to take stock. For me, I see a two year horizon in which to win a Cup. Picking Carlo was fantastic. Laughton showed he can bring it. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity with big salaries coming off the books.
If I am the Leafs I focus on re-signing Knies and Lorentz. They are more important than JT at this point IMO.
Then look at options in UFA, trades for players who may be out of favor but who are the right types. If he can work out a deal for Marner sign and trade eight years, perhaps get a Gamer in return for the team shedding cap (and obviously far less a salary than Marner), that would be a big win. If not, a little win would be a sign and trade for ANYTHING.
Give Benoit some growth as a puck carrier. Let Carlo shoot a little more if he sneaks in to the point. Get some muscle on McMann to prepare for heavy hockey.
They don't need to handcuff themselves again by burning all of the cap space. There is a UFA crop next year too and cap space will be king.
Pick only who you want and need. Make prudent trades. Change the DNA.

Is there a relationship between paying lots of money and winning playoff games? Here are the top 10 money earners this year. Only McDavid is still playing and realistically he is the only one that can carry a team, a city, a country on his back. I believe an intelligent and even distribution of funds among 20 players will serve you much better. And, the Leafs have 3 in the top 10 with very little to show for it. How do you think the best way is to manage the cap space?

I kinda felt like as time went on and the Shanaplan regime was more set in its ways it didn’t really hire the same quality of management executives, like the brain trust has closed down. I recall the days when we had Lamoriello, Hunter, Dubas and still went after McCrimmon.
Functionally I guess there’s a limit to how many head chefs you can put in one kitchen.
