Brad Richards Part II

Well said BRB, basically exactly how I feel.

My only fear in buying out Richards after this season is that Sather will just direct that money to another aging free agent. So in summary I actually want to wait to buy out Richards till after next year to protect our GM from himself. Pretty sad statement.

Its purgatory, is what it is.

The elite #1 center that is necessary to win in the NHL is "Captain Ahab" Sather's Moby Dick.

13 years and he hasnt been able to develop, sign, or trade for one. This team won't win a cup until that piece is brought in and hopefully doesnt implode here.

The lockout shouldn't buy anyone the benefit of the doubt this far into the season. He's had plenty of time to get into game shape. If he can't keep up over a 48 game season, how could he possibly do so over 82 games?
I don't agree that it should buy anyone the BoTD, but we're talking Sather here

If Sather's history of failed signings has any sort of "silver lining" it's that he hasn't been afraid of dealing with his mistakes in a no-nonsense manner. Traded Gomez. Burried Redden. Shipped out Kotalik. Traded Gaborik -- though he wasn't nearly as bad as the rest.

The real issue is that I could see Sather buying out Richards this summer, and promptly handing his $6M per year over to Derek Roy.

That's why I'm hesitant to believe he'll buyout Richards this year (partially because I think bad things will happen if he does)

I don't like Weiss and I don't like Ribeiro. Worse comes to worse we can go into next season with Stepan and Brassard as top two centers that's if we can get a third line that is some threat to score. Maybe Richards will be our 3rd line center next year and still earmarked for that final buyout.

I know many don't share my feelings but for a team who doesn't select very high most years, adding UFA's for nothing but money and then dealing them for solid assets is a good way for a contending team to be good for a long time. It may not be as "sexy" as getting a top-5 pick, but in theory, it should help.

This organization would never do that.

Richard's will get the benefit of the doubt, shortened season, etc, more excuses from a franchise that is full of them.

I think my friends are underestimating this guys decline. He looks horrible, and that has little to do with his conditioning.

Will Glen be making these decisions? Bruce Garrioch and Steve Simmons wrote about Brian Burke replacing Joe Nieuwendyk in Dallas. Garrioch wrote Burke has been linked to the Rangers if Sather steps aside from his GM duties. Burke's buddies are talking. Dolan and Burke? Dolan likes his executives to not talk to the media. Burke has diarrhea of the mouth. Donnie Walsh was shown the door for many reasons. A major reason was Walsh liked to talk to the media before every game. Dolan was never comfortable with that. Burke is a major reason why the NHL CBA has cap recapture. Even if Richards was playing at a decent level, the Rangers should still amnesty Richards before June 2014 because of cap recapture. Sather doesn't talk to the media. Glen Grunwald talks to the media once or twice a season. Burke can't keep his mouth shut. Jeff Gorton should be making these decisions.

It would really be disgusting if the good ol' boys network inserted Brian Burke in here after Sather steps down. Makes me sick just thinking about it.

Please buy him out once we lose in 1st rd!

This team is not making a run this year. We showed zero heart last night in a must win game. Miller is better than Richards at this point. And they are going in opposite directions. Stepan is our #1. Brass our #2. Miller could be #3. That leaves money to sign our own guys: Hagelin, McD, Stepan, Lundqvist. Without buying out Richards at least one of those guys is gone. . .

Wrong.

Actually he's right.

Miller is a better skater, better passer, better shot, better vision, in better physical shape, stronger, and 13 years younger.

Shame he couldnt show all those things, at all, RIGHT NOW, which was the context of the issue.

Just because Richards sucks now, doesnt make untrue statements true.

Amnesty buyout for Richards is in the cards because of the cap recapture. Even if Richards was playing well, the Rangers should still buy him out. The NHL made a big deal about cap recapture in the CBA talks. It dealt with a small group of players and the NHLPA gave it to them. A major reason for the cap recapture is Brian Burke. He doesn't like the long term contracts. He testified for the NHL in the Kovalchuk case. Testified against his mentor Lou Lamoriello. Nice guy.

Just seems to be getting progressively worse and worse with each game. I smell another "retooling" in the off-season!

But we have the best GM in hockey to retool with. I am so confident that the 15th try for another big money, washed up free agent won't be a bust this time :sarcasm:
Take us to the promise land Glen. We know 14 years is not enough time. How about another 11 to make it a nice quarter century?! :help:

Agree and disagree.

I think some of the mental mistakes can be attributed to conditioning. When you don't have legs it forces your decision making process to change.

The whole teams timing and chemistry has been out of whack all season. And that missing synchronicity is aggravated by the coaching.

Anyway, while I doubt we are getting a completely "changed" player I don't think a return of 11/12 Richards is impossible or even unlikely. Since there is money at stake, at least very least the effort should be there.

CORRECT! At least with Miller there is some semblance of heart, speed, chasing down the puck, etc. I rather lose like that than the way we lose with 19 on the ice. Plain and simple. Hopefully, next year will be that year even if we have to take a step back to take 2 steps forward.
