The Bruins fans on social media who hate Sweeney so bad can’t even spend 1 second to figure out what happened

Sweeney showed a ton of class IMO. There are GM's in pro sports that wouldn't have done what Sweeney did.

"Take my offer now or be traded" is a strong arm tactic.

"He went where he wanted to go" is disingenuous. He wanted Boston.

If their offer was well beyond his market value they didn't "have" to trade him. He'd have just taken it once he tested the market.

The cap is going up 30% over the next 3 years and almost 60% from when he signed his last deal (which was considered the best bargain in the NHL). To call 6 "the same" is disingenuous. 6 when he signed last was 8.2% of the cap, that would've only been 5.2% in year 3.

Marchand went to them hat in hand and they did not even extend a face saving gesture. They made a choice. You can agree with it, but they made it. Whatever their gap was, with a 113.5m salary cap, is a rounding error.

Sorry, but you have it wrong....management didn't make a choice, BOTH management and Marchand did. If he wanted to stay as bad as he said, they would have come to an agreement. You're putting all the blame on management for not budging here when negotiations are a two-way street.

You can disagree with them doing enough to keep him, but fact is neither side made enough of a concession get this done.

Also no sane GM is keeping a UFA in the hope that they will change their mind after testing the market, that is terrible business.

Bad Zad gets 5 for 5 and they won't give Brad 6 for 3. A masterful piece of work from Neely and Sweeney. Never mind EL at 7.75 for the same or slightly less PPg as Marchand. Can we fire them tomorrow? I am not even asking for a friend.

I know we're not privy to all the behind door dealings. But the more I read about this situation. The more I think the B's did not deal with Marchand with respect. For being the franchise icon that he is. And did a disservice to him and the fan base. I'm of the belief that there is something special about playing your whole career wearing only 1 jersey. And Marchand deserved that fate. For everything he did for this team and organization. The Rat was a true Bruin!

I agree with everything you said other than Marchand “deserved” to wear one sweater. You don’t just pretend it’s not a business (one in which the amount you spend comes with a hard limit) for a player. Regardless of their legacy. You try to come to a deal . When you don’t, you do what is best for the franchise. That reality doesn’t just automatically fall on the Bruins organization as some type of failure.

It’s the fans job to fall in love with players. It’s the FO’s job to think beyond that and look forward. Seeing Marchand leave so abruptly sucks, but given the circumstances, I am not convinced it was the wrong thing to do, even with an underwhelming return.

Sweeney showed plenty of loyalty to Marchand with the offer and getting him to Florida.

They can call Marchand-Bennett-Tkachuk line The Rat Patrol and get a pic of them in an Army jeep.

At what point do you put any blame on Marchand for him not re-signing? Should the team just concede to whatever demands he has to show Marchy respect?

I love the guy and didn't want to move him, but I think they made the difficult and correct decision in the end. Sometimes it's hard to not bring emotion into it when looking at a move like this

I just don't see a world where you sell off Coyle, Carlo and Freddy, and it makes any sense to keep Marchand the rest of the year to play maybe 5 games and hope he signs.

If he truly wants to be here they will have another discussion in July and we will have another draft pick regardless of that outcome.

Hate to see Brad in any other jersey, but you nailed it...it's our job to fall in love with these guys and management's job to make those tough decisions on when to move on.

They kept Chara until FA. They kept Bergy, Rask and Krejci til retirement. It was probably about time they moved on from a guy before that point.

One or both of them did not want Brad here in the end.......The more i think of it....this smells of Charlie/Neely with Sweeney having to do the dirty work. We may never know.

Posters on here lose their minds over every contract, how much bitching would go on here if they gave him 4 years at 7 plus million on a 35 and over contract that you can't get rid of! 3 years at his 6.125 contract was more than fair and if he didn't think so then it's time to go. Should have done the same with Swayman, 8 million or, where would you like to be traded. I like both players very much but what has this team accomplished in the last few yrs with this same group? It was time for change and with the new guys we brought in and the injured guys back healthy, I am optimistic for next season!

All the people screaming about how badly Marchand was treated and wanting Sweeney fired have to go listen to what Brad Marchand is saying. Brad himself is saying Sweeney is the best GM in the NHL and there's no reason for him to say anything like that unless everything is hunky dory with him. That's it.

I wish him well in his cup run (unless of course the Bruins miraculously get in the playoffs and play Florida)

The Bruins organization noticeably leads the NHL over a long period by moving out superstars. Whether the beginning, middle or nearing end of their career, it seems that the Bruins continually break the hearts of the faithful fans by trading away the biggest names to wear the spoked-B. For various reasons the team has moved on from some of the games most talented players. Why is it the Bruins that always has to shock the hockey world with these moves?? In my time as a fan-

Orr is not a good example. Done dirty by Alan Eagleson at free agency who did not tell Orr that Boston’s offer included 18+% ownership of the Bruins. For that and other transgressions, Eagleson was both sued and disbarred. Orr didn't have all the facts when signing with Blackhawks as free agent | NHL.com
