What actually goes into this era adjusting
The average number of goals per game is held constant across years. So in higher scoring eras, like the bulk of Gretzky’s career, the average team scored between like 3.7 and 4 goals per game, but you see that dip down through the dead puck era where it’s closer to 2.6-2.8. It means that goals scored in lower-scoring eras are “worth” more than when everyone was scoring like gangbusters.

I think the baseline season they used to translate into concrete numbers (like Ovechkin at 997 now) was one from Gordie Howe’s era.

I always bring this up, but when you era-adjust the scoring, Ovechkin passed Gretzky years ago. And I think it should be viewed that way, because both defense and goaltending have just been way, way better throughout Ovechkin's career than Gretzky's.
Comparing eras is silly IMO. Gretzky also played with a wooden stick, skates weren’t nearly as good, and off season training wasn’t remotely as good. He was miles ahead of his peers though, and that’s all you can really look at.

Appreciate the Insight but I was looking for a little bit deeper like what is the ratio for the math that actually goes into it

wonder what the three other teams were for rantanen

supposedly toronto based on the leafs rumours circulating. some think edmonton? maybe vegas? florida?

curious because carolina is a warm weather, decent tax state. a lot of people are talking about dallas for those two reasons, but it doesn't seem clear that was his criteria.

i think he probably just really wants to win? the teams he reportedly would have signed with (edmonton, colorado and dallas obviously) are all top tier contenders. if florida is another that's basically 4 of the 5 cup favorites (and who wants to play in winnipeg even when they're great? no one)

Just guessing but Florida and Vegas would be my guesses.

I mean, it's more or less what I explained above -- you do the sum of each season's (goals scored in a season x multiplier for that season) where the multiplier is based on the difference from the mean season (1.0).

It's spelled out step by step on the page I linked to above, but it's basically just intuition -- some seasons are higher scoring than others, so each year is weighted as though the same total number of goals per game is scored by a team.

Wow. Rantanen really didn't like Carolina.

He had no ties to the team. But that’s probably why Rod isn’t happy with the GM. They gave up Necas and Drury to get Stank for this year’s PO run. Either you accept that you may not sign Rant or you just hold onto your own guys.

Carolina has let players hit ufa like Hamilton, Ferland, Pesce, Skjei, Teravinen.

Wow! Have the Leafs and Marner reached a 'fork in the road'? Reliable reports have surfaced that he was offered up in a trade involving Rantanen. But the Cane's didn't want to exchange one 'unsigned impending UFA' for another.

Now the Leafs are saying they wanted Marner back all along. But seems to me, he's reaching the same pivotal point as Boeser is in Vancouver. Wouldn't shock me if both guys are on new NHL teams by July 1st.

I know some posters have poured cold water on it in the past--but does Marner to the Canucks as a premier UFA signing make any sense?

If Marner wants to sign here you don't even think twice. But I doubt it.
