I'm not even sure Clifford is a deterrent at this point. There were a couple of instances last year when I was expecting him to stand up for a teammate and he skated the other way. I personally thought he did a lousy actually enforcing anything, but played decently enough to be a part-time 4th liner when a fresh set of legs are needed. Maybe he being on the bench is enough to make his teammates each feel two inches taller; but he certainly picks and chooses his spots when to make his presence known, and not always at the right times.
That’s one of my biggest gripes. I saw far too many times where his presence was needed but was nowhere to be found.

If you are the guy to bring this toughness element and it’s your supposedly redeeming quality, then you need to use it effectively.

There were too many instances where I thought to myself, “Ok Clifford here is the spot where you earn your keep”. Then nothing happened.

At that point I would rather just see Mac Mac running around with reckless abandon.

And I am just now realizing this is a Bozak thread. My bad.

For any cap guru's out there, how do bonuses work with LTIR? You can only get LTIR relief up to the amount you exceed the cap. So if you are using LTIR, you are basically at the cap but with some LTIR cushion. Bozak only counts as $750+ against the cap during the season and his bonuses don't get factored in at that time. Let's say he makes $1.5M in bonuses. Let's also pretend we are using LTIR all season for a variety of injuries, but we never use the full LTIR. Because we used our full cap, but could not get LTIR relief on the bonuses, the bonus would roll over as a penalty for next year, correct? Or does the unused LTIR throughout the year somehow offset those bonuses?

The short answer is that you can only offset bonuses (i.e.- not carry them over) with available cap space, not with available LTIR space. If we are using even $1 of LTIR space the entire year, 100% of the bonuses earned by Bozak and anyone else will carryover to next season.

Thanks. That is what I thought but wanted to double check. For a team that historically has someone injured as often as we do, that could be a potential downside to this contract structure. But I do not think we could have fit him at the full amount when healthy at all, so we were force to take this option if we wanted him. Still a good deal, but I am just looking at potential issues.

I would add the clarification it's whether or not the team is using LTIR on the final day of the regular season. So the Blues for example could start the season using a Sundqvist LTIR then later make moves to activate him when healthy and finish the season under the cap. Conversely a team could be under the cap most of the season before doing a late LTIR and finish the season with no free cap space.
