You think passangers of a car shouldn't wear seatbelts? Your argument is on this level.

NHL rulebook is awfully unclear, but this is actually directly quoted from the rules:

"If the player returns to his players’ bench to be substituted for, he may only return to the ice during play with a helmet (with the chinstrap properly fastened). No player may exit the penalty bench duringplay without a helmet (with the chin strap properly fastened)."

And it mandates properly fastening the helmet's strap. But for whatever reason, it doesn't generally state that the helmet's strap needs to be properly fastened. Only within the context of returning to play from the bench or the penalty box.

Either way, assuming Nurse was sitting on the bench at some point before that, his helmet's strap should have been fastened according to the rulebook.

More important than the rulebook, it should have been fastened for the player's own personal safety.
It looked like Reeves’ shoulder knocked out Nurse and then the head hitting the ice caused the cuts and blood. Nurse wearing his helmet properly strapped certainly would have leased the damage when his head hit the ice.

Reaves hit was textbook blindside hit, point of contact with the head. He should receive minimum five games for the hit. Personally, I’d make these penalties harsher, but that seems to be DoPs wheelhouse. Then again, with the random wheel of suspensions, you never know how many games it could be. Despite having six prior suspensions, he isn’t considered a repeat offender, as the last suspension was playoffs 2021, outside of the 18 months required. I personally find that a weird rule.

Now without absolving Reaves of any responsibilty in the least, and am not saying his penalty should be any less harsh, what is Nurse doing there? Keep your head up, and be aware of where other players are on the ice, don’t be admiring the puck on your stick. That’s not only a safety issue, but a hockey issue for passing the puck, not losing it to a teammate…. If Reaves point of contact hadn’t been the head, he still would have blown Nurse up, and Oilers likely lose possession. Again, Reaves is fully responsible for making a clean hit, which he clearly did not, and should be suspended. Nurse does need to be smarter as well though.

Sucks nurse got hurt , Reaves bares some responsibility for sure but it wasn’t egregious.

What is egregious is having been a hockey player all your life and still managing to attempt to round the net and skate up ice with possession and a full head of steam and your head down staring at your skates completely unaware that other players are trying to crush you.

I think Nurse should get 20 games for that absolutely mind numbing display of self destruction.

Also if you watch that clip and your first reaction is …. ”OMG Reaves deserves 50 games for that and call the cops to charge him with assault , no place for that derrr”

Instead of ….”What in the flying f*** is Nurse skating with his head down for”

Then please leave the hockeyverse and take up watching woman’s basketball or something. Some of us enjoy contact sports and we don’t need beta soy boys crying and screaming and ruining what is still the greatest game on earth.

Thanks

Can someone explain the purpose of Ryan Reaves playing in the NHL to me?
He is supposed to hit and fight people....which until this hit he hadn't done much of the former and he hasn't had a single fight all year....so he is a cardio merchant at this point and an empty roster spot.

Too bad it wasn’t Kaprisov he hits you’d be singing a different tune.

On one hand it was a hockey play in the sense that Reaves was pursuing the puck on the forecheck even making an attempt on it before following through with the hit.

On the other he carelessly following through on a hit of an opponent in a vulnerable position and it was a clear headshot that could have ended up really bad.

Getting tossed from the game should take a game out of the suspension but Reaves has been suspended a few times already.

My guess is 3-4 games

As much as Parros hates the Leafs, if there's one thing he loves, it's enforcers like himself.

Him and Reaves probably settle on 3 games before fake fighting and having an arm wrestle like old boys.

I’m pretty sure the “hearing” is just going to be Parros checking in with his boy to discuss how to further advertise the Violent Gentlemen brand. At the end they’ll probably realize they have to give Reaves something, so he will get the max fine of 5k

No jump, arms tucked in, shoulder hit, the problem is Nurse being a dumbass with his head down. If he’s looking up Reaves shoulder hits him in the chest. Punishing a dude for the result of the hit instead of the hit itself is typical NHL trash.

Reaves is built like a linebacker, when he hits you he will kill you. “Omg what a dirty hit” they say, WTF do you think is going to happen to a moron looking down skating out from his own net lol. In all honesty Nurse and Bouchard gotta be two of dumbest players in the whole league

Kind of looks like it's a normal hit except for his shoulder getting Nurse in the head.

Doesn't seem to jump, or elbow, but does extend the elbow to explode into him after contact.

I'm guessing the 5 and kicked out is possibly all he gets unless the angles in the replay don't do the hit justice.
It's been normalized, but it's not normal. Don't have to chicken wing a guy to target. He comes up late from a stance that would have made it clean to make contact with head. The last part of the replay, from behind Reeves, is definitive.

You know a shoulder to the head prevents it all but continue with your normal horrible takes

Wonder how much of this was due to Nurse not wearing his helmet properly. Even in that video of the hit, the strap of the helmet is loosely swinging around right before the hit. As soon as he gets hit, the helmet gets displaced, and doesn't protect him from anything. He also got cut by the visor because the helmet wasn't on properly.

NHL has rules for properly wearing the equipment, and I think they should pay more attention on tightening the strap on the helmet correctly. I've even specifically used Nurse as an example for someone who wears the helmet completely incorrectly in the past.

It will be interesting for me to see whether Nurse will be wearing his helmet with the strap properly tightened upon his return, or whether he will keep playing like this. If he gets hit again like that and the helmet actually falls off(which it easily can when the strap is so loose), he could actually die.
I’ve wondered about the equipment thing in the past because players frequently misuse it. Forget NHL rules, it is actually law that you have to wear your safety equipment properly. Occupational Health and Safety. Usually reads as a list of things the employer shall and employee shall. Employer shall provide safety equipment, employee shall wear it at all necessary times and wear it properly. I am constantly stopping employees if I see them doing something and addressing it then proceeding to progressive discipline where necessary. My guess is NHL does nothing. If they did you wouldn’t see things like Tkachuk constantly chewing his mouth guard.

Not too sure why the personal attack. Anyway, clearly Nurse’s head hit the ice and his helmet not being secured properly to start with compounded the injury.
There are going to be collisions and bad hits (which obviously this was) so players need to be as well protected as possible, which includes wearing the helmet properly.

Let's for the sake of argument run with that statement.
Reaves sees Nurse, see that oh Nurse got his head down and thinks to himself...*but its okay, I'm coming shoulder height, he will get up to normal position...oh no he isn't...well let's ram him in the head...booyah! I got no responsibility for my actions as long as I can claim I thought he would raise himself up and committed to the hit already*

Fantastic argument for a "clean hit"!

Imo Reeves takes responsibility here. Hes a very awkward player who has little to no skill. A player with body awareness and skill would make shoulder to shoulder contact. Nurse still might hit his head on the ice, considering the force of impact and he didn’t have his helmet cinched properly, but the initial contact would not have been to the head.

Clean hit, Nurse had his head down and exposed himself, worst of it came when his head was cut by his visor and head hitting the ice. Reavo is a tank.
