Proposal: Bourque and Dumba to Pittsburgh

It'll be interesting to see how Dallas culls the herd this summer. Can't keep all the good players, and dedicating 4.5 mil to a healthy playoff scratch could present some problems.

There's already a whole thread discussing what Dallas might do this offseason: Speculation: - Dallas Stars offseason. Who comes back and who doesn't?

Worth a read before you speculate any further.

And I wouldn't be so sure Bourque gets a 4.5M offersheet, or even an offersheet at all. You're treating something that is extremely rare as a foregone conclusion. He is definitely a prime target for an offersheet, but it takes two to tango.

I don't know where you saw that, but it wasn't me. I only said it would be dumb to put together a package like the one offered by the Habs fan when you could simply put out an offer sheet and it would only cost a 2nd.

I'm really confused for the response in here. Are we talking about a different Mavrik Bourque here? He's 23 years old, has only 1 NHL season where he finished with 25 points in 73 games and is a healthy scratch for Dallas right now. I really don't see any way that a team is paying more than a 2nd for his RFA rights, and they can just throw a 2nd round compensation offersheet at Dallas that they likely wouldn't have the money to match.

Dumba has another year at $3.75 million, is also getting healthy scratched by Dallas right now and was horrid when he was playing for Dallas. He's a negative value piece for sure, one Dallas would assuredly want to move considering they only have $5.8 million in cap space with a 15 man roster for next year.

I'm just really confused for why people think that package for a 3rd is somehow this crazy lowball offer. Dallas is both trading a guy they likely can't afford while also getting out of a bad contract they definitely want to move out. Maybe I can see a late 2nd for that, but a 3rd isn't really that far off from that either.
With the cap going up, Dumba doesn't have the negative value for this upcoming season that he did last season. Therefore, you would need to consider what a trade for Bourque would look like by itself. I think the Stars could get more than a 3rd for him in a trade.

I'm not exactly sure how but as a Sharks fan, I would welcome a conversation with Stars fans about how you'd prefer to alleviate your cap concerns to keep the guys you want. I think the Sharks would be receptive to a Bourque/Dumba cap clear effort for a draft pick. The Sharks would probably offer the Ottawa 2nd to get something done since that's a better way to pay compared to the offer sheet route that people are mentioning in this thread. If not that 2nd then the Colorado 2nd in 2026 would also be an option here. I'd rather keep our own when it's in the 30's most likely compared to a playoff team's 2nd. If there's another route a Dallas fan would prefer to take, I think the Sharks would listen.

Whether a player has negative value depends on what situation the team is in. Dallas needs to clear out money because they only have like $6 million in cap space with a 15 man roster. The cap is going to be higher, yes, but Dumba sucks and the Stars are desperate to clear out money.

It's pretty much the exact scenario that teams have to pay to move out contracts.
