Boston is last in the East

As a Habs fan im not celebrating too hard.

They still have Pasta, Lindholm and McAvoy. Swayman is the key.

They have a knack of drafting good.

I actually expect them back in the playoff hunt next year with a high end prospect in their back pocket.

Swayman will come back - 1G
Pasta is amazing- 1W
Zacha is a great complimentary player - 2C
The entire D is pretty darn good

This is a retool. They need 2 good forwards. Ideally a 1C to push Zacha to 2C and a top 6 winger.

Healthy, the D and G should be good. Obviously, assumes Swayman returns to form mentally, which the Bruins kind of have to. If he doesn’t, it’s a different conversation.

They really need a 1C and a first line caliber player to anchor the 2nd line. They have cap space and they suddenly have draft capital again, but it’s much easier said than done. They essentially have to hit on this pick and then find another first liner via UFA or trade over the next couple seasons to retool.

I think a lot of clubs would struggle with that ask. But Boston seems to always get the right guys (except this year). If a franchise can retool that quick, Boston/Dallas/Florida strike me as clubs that could. The other 2 have other advantages obviously but the Bruin's have been so consistently good for so long that I think they are a 'draw' for superstars. Time will tell. I'd hate to see Boston being 90's bad again.

It most certainly has. They get their 1OA then start trying right away. Need to suck for a good 3-5 years straight. Go look at their drafting post Eichel. 2-3 picks high could have been the difference between Tkachuk instead of Nylander, Makar instead of Mittlestadt. A lot of if's, but management dropped the ball left and right tehre.
I'd suggest waiting for it work before heralding it as the blueprint. It's easy to tank.. a lot harder to start winning again.

Bottoming out for a while is the most proven way to build cup champions.

However, there are many variables you can't even control. Is it a strong draft class, does the lottery go favorably etc.

Boston is now last in the East and 4th worst in the league.

The Tampa, Boston, Florida & Toronto streak of leading the Atlantic is now over.

Some people had them dropping out of the playoffs, but I don't think many had them falling this hard.

The Swayman contract is a problem if he doesn't bounce back.

Do they retool and hope Swayman returns to form?

Or do they go full rebuild?
who know, you can never count boston out, all the upcoming UFA's they just traded could end up coming back july 1st and prolong the decay.

Sweeney doesn't seem like a smart GM with how he handled Swayman this summer.

They should rebuild, they are an O6 team in a desirable market, the players will come and it will be fairly quick compared to other markets.

Boston will still get their pick of the premium free agents despite being garbage.

Their situation and Buffalo's is never the same.

So what? Buffalo has had their pick of the premium draft picks despite being garbage

Buffalo is a perfect example of what Edmonton would be if they didn’t get McDavid. Constantly drafting lottery picks with nothing to show for it.

No reason why they can't bounce back and be at least a bubble team playoff contender next year. No reason for a full scale fire sale and mass exodus of season ticket holders. But, I will pile on and admit this is enjoyable to see.

Just part of the natural life cycle of a team. Like Chicago and LA, who were multiple Cup winners a decade or so ago, BOS will be picking early in the draft for a change. Now, it is incumbent on the team to pick well, pick often, and keep the players who remain on the NHL team playing hard.

What they want to avoid is being the Minnesota Wild. A team that is neither good enough to win, or bad enough to pick high in the draft and get a star. They also want to not be the Sabres, perpetually crap.

Most BOS fans will understand this process, and be patient.

Last year was obviously a huge fluke and the B's have been trending towards this path for years

Them drafting their core in all later rounds (2nd-3rd, Marchand, Bergeron, Krejci) and netting 3 President Trophies + Cup is still insane though

I predicted them to miss the playoffs last year. And they had some flukey run instead and everyone thought I was dumb

Well…. Similar team started the season this year and they crumbled and are in full tank mode now

f*** the bruins, I hope they rot at the bottom for decades

It's pretty impressive work to be honest. You don't want to go half-way with the tank and rebuild. They're all-in on that, and quickly. Lot of franchises get stuck in the middle.

Breaking news, rebuilding team that traded away some of their best players and had Bergeron/Krejci retire in recent years is bad.

They're doing it the right way, and honestly it was expected at some point. They were an elite team for like what 13 years ? Something like that, won a cup, multiple cup finals. It was going to happen at some point.

Its a lot to do with being in an undesirable market and location.

Players that have a choice of where they play, like most stars and good to great players will never choose to play in a market like Edmonton or Buffalo in their primes if they aren't winning. Top it off with dysfunctional management and its a recipe for disaster.

Yes, winning the lottery changed the course for the Oilers, and thats not a bad thing. The bad thing and the reason they've languished in middle of the pack for so long is no stability in the GM or coaching roles, look at how many Gm's and coaches the Oilers have had since McDavid was drafted, i think its something like a new coach every 1.5 years.

Buffalo....its the ownership in addition to the market. They drafted Eichel who was shit for Buffalo and went to Vegas and seems to be doing alright... tells me it was a buffalo problem more than an Eichel problem.

As the cap goes up the haves and have nots will only increase in disparity.

I think thats why so many sports fans are contrarian, if you whine, complain and predict doom long enough eventually you will be right.

My post was ment to be sarcastic, although I have predicted them for like a decade to not finish as high as they have(I generally put them as a wild card team or wild card contender due to them getting 1 year older). ;)
