Johnson did not play badly, but he didn't bring anything more to the team that they didn't already have in younger developing players. He never moved the dial when on the ice. The team had other options, and when they claimed Wahlstrome, he was the obvious choice to let go. Wish him well.

Very likeable player, even though he had his best years with a rival. He will probably enjoy his twilight years in Switzerland making a good income, and then he can retire a young man with total financial security

Tough life!

What a strange career. Absolutely popped at the start and never found that spark again. He never lived up to his contract extension in Tampa.

Considering where he started as an undersized and undrafted WHL scorer, Johnson had a very successful career.

Dude is out here terminating 1 way contracts at his age and mileage

Not a snowballs chance in hell his agent advised him on this .

The league minimum salary probably didn't matter to Johnson in the end as much as having to go to the minors and grind it out. That guy is coming off a $35 million and $10 million contract so he's got a good life to get back to...

Yeah, $46.7 million in career earnings if capwages is correct. He's probably not too concerned with the extra $465,000 (league min * .6) and would rather just be with family than grind it out in the AHL.

Harder once you stick him in a banger-ish role, too, he is strong but it isn't really his thing for obvious size reasons. Loved him in TB, sad to see him fall off but thats the nature of things.

It’s probably not about the money for him. He’s made good coin as an NHLer.

They likely agreed when he signed that if it didn’t work out then a mutual termination instead of being sent to the AHL.
He’s already on a league min contract. Wouldn’t interested clubs have claimed him on waivers?

I’ll answer my own question a bit, I suppose there’s no rush for a team to do it. He can be signed whenever, and demand probably isn’t so high you’d worry about the loss if another team grabs him before you.
