Seems like a weird place for him to sign. Surprised he didn't go to a team needing a center.

so that's what they're paying 40 points these days?

Yes. Look at the top scorers in the NHL. There is fewer than one 70 point player per NHL team. So, the top scorer on a team is 70 points. That drops your 2nd line top point guy down to the 50 point range.

So, no surprise that Backes, Ericsson, Ladd who are in their early 30's getting $6 million. Lucic and Okposo who are 28 got 7 year deals for $6 million per season.

I am ok with this move. Having a defensively weak 3rd line center killed us last year. Still, I would have preferred the Okposo contract to this one.

Provided there isn't a NMC, we can just expose Backes next year in the expansion draft and this effectively becomes a one year deal.

Why the **** didn't we keep Loui.

One good year for the B's - ONE - and you're missing Eriksson?

Even when Backes production doesn't match the contract, dude can still play the hard-nosed and grinding Brind'Amour/Recchi role of leader/vet presence on a team going young. Will still be valuable and leadership (he just was Captain of Blues).

Eriksson? God knows what he will be good for when he starts to slow down.

Good riddance Loui.

We do need a center. Ryan Spooner may be a decent second line center somewhere, but he was a terrible fit on the third line in Boston.

This is a bad deal. I've watched Backes in the West the past few years and his game has regressed. He's definitely not a 6M player and that 5 year term is gross.

So shortsighted some of you:

Mackenzie had it right folks. One year deal. Future captain of the Las Vegas team. Exposed in expansion draft after one year in Boston.
