Connor Bedard
Adam Fantilli
Leo Carlsson
Matvei Michkov
Will Smith

Tier drop

Dalibor Dvorsky
Zach Benson
Oliver Moore
David Reinbacher
Ryan Leonard

This was my list back when we found out we were picking 5th as preference for the habs. Meaning I'd want Bedard 1st etc... Seems I was way too high on Moore and Benson, and wasn't sold on Leonard. but meh not too bad.

Man this is so telling. 0/10 teams had anyone outside the big 5 in the top 5. It should be extremely clear to everyone. If we do not draft one of Fantilli/Carlsson/Smith/Michkov, then it is an absolute reach by our team. This draft, this team, this point in our rebuild, is not the time to make a reach. We need the star power. We need the highest likelihood of star power. We need one of the remaining big 5.

We need the best player, not star power. All we can do at this point is put our trust in Hughes and then let the chips fall where they may.

We should draft BPA not Best player for our team. Do you want to replay Kotkaniemi?

I edited my response prior to yours because I knew people would take it like this. Yes, best player, not star power

Skill/upside.

Later we can maybe grab MacKinnon/Sotheran for RDs, would like if we grabbed another 2nd and try and get Akey. For some reasons I really think another G would help, too, would really like Juha Jatkola in the 4th round, could help quickly in Laval at least.

Wouldn't be that upset getting Leonard/Dvorsky at 5 instead of Michkov, but would be impatient to listen for Hughes explanation.

Don't forget he also said that some scouts had more of a top 6. In any case I doubt they will reach. The only question is whether they feel like Mitchkov is worth all the risks. I'm sure they will meet with him and decide.

I think it is very important to find a player that will adapt well to Montreal. Especially with a high pick. The whole Kotkienemi thing should really underline that point.

Also, interestingly, his 'Super 6' includes Dvorsky, somewhat maligned by some here for some reasons.

Pretty sure some think Leonard is better than Smith but that could also be some Jedi mind trick they're playing with each other

10 teams are telling you the best player is in that top 5. I think that’s the point. Hughes and a handful of anti Russian fans on here are saying the best player is outside the top 5. I’ll take the word of the 10 nhl teams thanks.

(Yes, michkov has risks. But those Russia related risks are the only reason he’s even available at 5th overall potentially.)

I'm not sure why people are so adamant we need star power immediately. We don't even have the vestiges of a decent core yet.
Build something good manage the cap and grab the star power at the opportune moment. We messed up our tank but that is water under the bridge now.
If we can't get a star this season the least we can do is ensure the ones we do have are supported properly.

Hmm unsure: Difficulties under pressure, not exactly the shooting kind of D..

McKenzie has him pretty high compared to other sources.

The other "sources" are not sources.

They are almost entirely staffed by weenies who never played the sport. Strbak not being good under pressure is just not true, he was outstanding at both the U18's and WJC. The fake scouts base most of their opinion on stats which is why they will never be real scouts and will continue to peddle their snake oil to customers who don't know any better. Maybe Strbak doesn't develop, who knows but the eye test is very impressive. If McKenzie's poll had him as the first pick in the 2nd round that guarantees that more than 1 of his NHL scouts had him as a first rounder.

He's not. A huge part of Tkachuk's game is his size.

Leonard is 5'11 3/4.
100% agree. Though Leonard plays big, its easy to do so in the USHL. In the NHL he will be hard pressed to bully anyone. He will have to rely on his skill.

Which is why you select the most skilled player at 5OA - Michkov if he's available.
