I had always been in the camp that parity in a league is good and the parity in the NHL right now is the best it's ever been. I see the argument all the time that a league can't have this much parity are for reasons such as now there are no truly great teams, or that the regular season is meaningless, or a slew a of other reasons. I never agreed with any of that, and had always staked my tent in the pro-parity side of the argument.
But after watching how the GS Warriors, the number 1 ranked Western Conference team, will play the Toronto Raptors, the number 2 ranked Eastern Conference team, in the NBA finals, I changed my stance somewhat. Now, I no longer just have a tent in the pro-parity side, but I've started developing my new house on the same land, complete with a swimming pool and small greenhouse on the side. For the life of me, I can't figure out how anyone can enjoy how predictable the NBA has become. It's not just that bad teams are bad, but good teams might as well clean their lockers after the season as well. The fact that the top-4 seeded teams in both conferences made their respective semi-finals assured that an upset just couldn't happen. And yet, the arguments against having parity in the NHL all seem to point toward making the league like the NBA. I'm by no means a basketball fan, so I know I'm making some very blanket statements, but seeing the Warriors make the finals for the 5th year in a row just made my eyes want to roll out of my skull.
I know this is a rant, but I promise I do have a point. I just want someone to explain why having as much parity in the NHL is somehow a bad thing? I want to see what other reasons that having a lot of parity is bad besides the concepts that there are no "true" great teams or the regular season becomes worthless. More than anything, I want to see if there is somehow a middle ground between the current NHL and current NBA. One where I can see some 90s Red Wings like teams, but the league doesn't lose its unpredictability. Such a scenario might not exist, but it might be fun to discuss.
