I’m hearing Mike Van Ryn is expected to join the Blues’ coaching staff. Van Ryn, who played 69 games with the Blues from 2000-03, was the head coach of the AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners last season. #stlblues

Not sure if this really deserves it's own thread since JR didn't go into what role he would be filling, but apparently our old buddy Mike Van Ryn is joining the Coaching Staff.

I'd guess he's our AHL coach for San Antonio. Every other likely position is taken. I doubt he is being brought in to coach the PP, as he wasn't that prolific on the PP in his career. Nor was his AHL team anything special there, tied with 3 other teams at 9th in the league. Maybe we add another player development coach at the NHL level to work with the younger players like Thomas more closely. That is Jackman's job though. So unless someone is getting fired, I think he's the new Rampage coach.

The question on everyone’s lips: how is he with the power play?
Tied for 10th in the AHL with Strome most of the season. 11.5% in the playoffs (with Strome), 2nd worst of AHL playoff teams. Not great. Played his favorites and interestingly didn't play Kyle Wood who was a PP specialist.

Van Ryn looks to be rising star in coaching profession. Had success at both Kitchener and Tuscon. Blues staff last year didn't seem to gel. I would expect either Berube or Sydor (or both) won't return to Blues bench (although may go to San Antonio).

Nice, Armstrong getting that replacement ready since he knows he might need to fire Yeo in January.

Did Van Ryn really only play like 70 games with us? Feels like he was on the team for quite a while.

Army should be on the phone with Talon every single day this summer. It’s not like Marchessault had 15 points before the draft. Thirty goal scorers don’t grow on trees. Tarasenko is the only Blues player to score 30 or more goals during the last 4 regular seasons. That’s right. One entire player scoring 30 goals. Somehow Talon wanted 2 non-difference making defensemen instead of a 30 goal scorer.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but that decision didn’t make sense at the time. Pysyk and Petrovic are both 26 and play behind Ekblad on the right side. It’s not like either have some Doughty ceiling.

Get on the phone Army.

I’ve been thinking about this for forever. He coached MacInnis’ son in Kitchener, where he also coached Opilka (and Mascherin...). Director of Player Development in Arizona, so he has a good organizational pedigree as well. I love it, whatever capacity he’s in!

Edit: funnily enough, Van Ryn was an assistant coach with Yeo in Houston in between his Pittsburgh and Minnesota gigs. This is literally the most obvious hire we’ve ever made

I don't see Sydor leaving, I thought he did really well with our D-Corps. I wouldn't be surprised if Berube looks elsewhere, our forward corps was the sore spot the whole season. Having Van Ryn come in can also shift Ott responsibilities to San Antonio, which would be great to me. I think he would do wonderful down there.

Haven’t seen this mentioned here yet, but Friedman listed Bill Armstrong (amongst several others) as candidates to join Toronto’s staff on both his column and podcast. Hope it doesn’t shake out that way post draft, but I also hope we can find a way to let the man keep his picks this year. We’d be in much worse shape without the results he and his team have been producing, and from pretty disadvantageous spots normally.

I think that was before they hired that Canucks guy. We should be in the clear now, at least as far as Toronto goes.

But yeah, I agree, he’s a critical piece of our front office

I didn’t necessarily read it that way. Sounds like Gilman will manage the Marlies, has some good experience working contracts, and is going to be a big part of their sports medicine push. I think they are still going to be in the market for a head scout.

Looks like Todd Nelson is heading to Dallas to be an assistant coach to Jim Montgomery. That kinda sucks! We’ll see about the actual results, but that’s looking like a fine coaching staff on paper

Well if they take Barmstrong, I say we just hire Mark Hunter haha. He played for us in the 80s!

Random thought here but I actually think we'll see Steen have a nice "bounceback" year next season, if you can call it that. Meaning he'll top 50 points.

I mean the guy played into May with a broken foot last season and then broke his hand in training camp. He didn't really get a fair shake. Now with a full 5-6 months of rest and hopefully better luck in camp that will allow him to start the season healthy, I think he'll contribute just fine. He's 34... it's really not that old. He should be a solid 2nd-line caliber player still.

Not worried about his contract. Beginning in 2019 he'll only have 2 years left. So that contract will be more moveable then, or at the very worst he'll still be a fine 3rd liner for the remaining 2 years.

I think having Fabbri back, and hopefully getting a top 6 roster addition this offseason, will help bring Steen back to his previous form. In addition to the injuries you mentioned, I think a big part of Steen's lower performance is that he was probably the most moved player in the lineup last season. He played LW, RW, and Center on all three of the top 3 lines over the course of the season. He seemed to be Yeo's go to guy for band aid duty when we got an injury on the forward corps. Hard to build chemistry when you are bounced around like that.

Any idea how long we have Bill Armstrong under contract? I can't imagine that the Blues would let him out of his contract for a lateral move into another organization. Teams will often/usually let guys explore a promotion outside the organization, but are much less willing to let a guy take the same position with another team. Hopefully we have him under contract for another year and Toronto has to fill the position before he is free to go there.
