This is an average NHL team if they're lucky. Average teams don't last long in the playoffs.

We lost Maroon and Steen at forward.
We lost Pietrangelo and Bouwmeister on defense.

We're a good team and saying we're average is a joke. Injuries/sickness happen and any team that has the wrong injuries or sickness at the wrong time can play poorly. The only place I am concerned about going forward is Parayko and his back. If Parayko is good to go I think we have a legitimate chance at a cup over the next 3-4 years.

Well here are my thoughts on the game:

1. The Avs played exactly how I expected, they're very good and highly skilled but not unbeatable
2. The Blues had no answers for the Rantanen-MacKinnon-Landeskog line
3. Blues started off well in the 1st, could have had the lead early, then weathered the storm as the Avs got some late momentum, being outshot 18-5 in a period though is not winning hockey.
4. Surprisingly our 2nd period looked a lot better than the regular season. We stayed with them.
5. Whether it was the early goal, the 3rd period was flat. It was all Colorado.

Binnington was outstanding tonight, one of his best performances ever I think! He gave us the chance to win, and we didn't take it. Overall we are not in panic button territory because again we held the Avs close, but we didn't bring our best game outside of a few players, and especially with Perron out that will continue to hurt us. You need a 60 minute effort from everyone!

Good analysis. I can't be that upset as the game went pretty much as expected. You can't stop the Avs offense, you can only hope to contain it. And despite the high # of shots, we did fairly well in that regard. We played well enough to keep ourselves in the game, but we are gonna need to bury almost every scoring chance we get because I don't see any way we outshoot the Avs. Tarasenko missed a golden opportunity early, Hoffman was robbed of the wraparound and from that point we didn't have many great scoring chances.

It's not the end of the world, and if we can steal game 2 then everything will be forgotten. Just a shame we couldn't capitalize on Binner's strong game.

We're basically down 2 out of 3 elite players on our team from that cup win. That makes a big difference. Tarasenko being what he is today makes a big difference for opposing lineups because they can focus on the rest of the lineup from a defensive perspective, and the possession game naturally suffers when a play driver like him isn't what he used to be. That and whether not you're willing to admit, Pietrangelo was the foundation of the Blues. He pushed the play foward in a way nobody on the current roster can and did it while munching minutes. Parayko is a great 2D, but he doesn't have the offensive impact of a cup winning #1. He has always been a huge step down in terms of play driving and chances with him on the ice in comparison. Krug gets stuck in the defensive zone way more often and hasn't shown the ability to step up and drive the offense without elite players to play with.

This team was bottom 10 in possession and expected goals. A competeing team should be around top 5 and the injuries we've faced this year aren't the difference between that disparity.

I watched 3rd period only, but our dmen are really bad under pressure. Bad passes, cant carry the puck up, just flip puck in the middle of ice.

Walman was guy who could being puck up by himself.

Not gonna say, not gonna say. We miss Pietro's transition game, grips passes, puck possession.

But yeah let's enjoy these 4 games what we have. Maybe this will wake up Army. Is this d-core good enough.

Tough loss for sure but thankfully Binner wasn't the problem. Hoffman scoring on that wraparound would have probably changed everything but it is what it is. Can't win the series in the first game so make some adjustments and do better next time

Sucks to lose, but DP missing really threw off our team chemistry. Binny was excellent and I thought the team played a very good 2nd period.

You could tell ROR misses his wingman.

10, 17, and 91 were ghosts out there. We need more from them.

I think everyone expects the Avs to win. Our guys need to play with more intensity. We need more physical play.

Watch how the Avs transition the puck out of the zone versus us. Avs D make crisp passes and they're on the attack in an instant. The Blues D just slam it around the boards and hope it gets to a teammate.
Well you said it better. But overally our transition game is poor.

The good was that Binnington looked like Binnington of old. We also stayed in the game, largely thanks to Binner.

The bad is rather lengthy. We gave up 50 total shots and only had 23 of our own. The Avs are good at limiting shots, so knowing that going in we have to figure out a way to limit theirs. Is our defense capable of that?

We allowed too many prime scoring chances out of those 50. When I have seen the Blues and been frustrated was because they left players open in front of the net. When I have seen them and been happy, they have not. Last night, the guy passing the puck sometimes had his choice of two players open in front of the net. Given we are probably not going to be given a lot of shots, we can't allow the good chances we allowed last night.

The Avs were better at getting to loose pucks and too often better and getting away from our checks.

My conclusion: What I saw last night was close to the worst possible scenario. The Avs appeared to be on their game at both ends of the ice. Our defense was not tight. What prevented it from being the worst possible scenario was Binner was outstanding back there. Guys, let's give him some help, or at the very least, not add to his concerns.

All that and we were still in the game. Shoring up our defense (similar refrain from this season) and converting more scoring chances should show dividends.

We have to work on zone entry and cut out the dump and chase. Got to carry the puck into the zone and retain control of the puck. At least change it up a little.
