You really don't see a difference between the the guy coming into Columbus saying that the culture is bad and vowing to make it better, and the guy who jumped ship saying that the culture was bad, but that *he* wasn't a part of it?
He just said he wanted out because the org had been too complacent for years, losing was accepted. I don't know if that constitutes as him saying " he wasn't part of it". When has he not been critical of himself?

If it's generally agreed on here that losing was acceptable in the organization as Waddell and Laine said, then it should be fine to hear from any messenger. It's an observation. For Waddell it's something he wants to fix as the new GM and for Laine something he wanted to get away from as a player.

Well if that's true, then Don Waddell is also wrong and needs the same scrutiny.
I have a hard time believing that a team of people who "earned" their way to the NHL, can accept losing to the point it becomes a culture, curse, bad luck whatever thing. A team needs three things, good management, good players and a good coach. All three will get ya a shot at the cup. And if you are missing one, the other two won't make up for it.

Waddell hasn't made any big moves. Monahan was the only addition to the team. And with the Jenner injury, that's a even trade off. So how does a team with a loser mentality, 69m cap and a stupid GM beat and be ahead in the standings, the team the Mighty Finn went to, who has a 90m cap and was suppose to be playoff bound?

I think it was the CBJ coaches

Now, I could say getting rid of the "diva" and "burdensome" Laine changed everything in Columbus. And he must have bee the reason why CBJ couldn't climb out of the gutter. They even brought in 13 to give him someone to play with.

Oilers were one of the worst for a long time but figured it out. Jackets have more or less been garbage their entire existence.
You mean by winning what, 4 lotteries in less than a 10 year period, including a generational talent? Edmonton has been lucky enough to have arguably two of the greatest players of all time, get off your high horse.

Meanwhile Columbus has yet to win a 1OA lottery and actually had the #1 taken away in 2012 to none other than EDM.

Hope you're missing the :sarcasm:

It's also possible that Waddell was thinking about Laine when making those comments.

Based on the way Laine didn't show up and eventually ran to the locker room with his tail between his legs last night for being legally hit during a mere NHL game, he might even be right.

You think it's easy to be bad enough to win 4 draft lotteries in 6 years? That takes a special kind, er, lack of talent.

A lot of revisionism going on in this thread about the Blue Jackets as a perennial last place team: the 2019 BJs were legitimately good. They went all in that postseason and then had to rebuild

They made the playoffs four years in a row until Laine showed up.

I'm not saying he's why they stopped making it, but the team had a workmanlike winning identity that he played a big role in blowing up. Per Portzline, in 2021 the team leaders tried to persuade Jarmo to trade Laine because they didn't think he fit that culture.

All these people walking fine lines. I'm impressed.

Let's see them walk with millions of dollars in their pockets and cameras in their face 24/7

So rumors from a hater.

When the person who has the deepest knowledge on background about all the players comes to strong conclusions like this, you might ask yourself about whether they have a point.

This. Either the hero or the victim, but never the villain.

He blames himself all the time. Very very negative to himself. He's just a negative person.

Noted. Narcissists can use self loathing to deflect criticism, though. It’s a less common trait, but one that allows them control.

Its nice to see Laine score goals finally

But its quite funny that he can only do so on the powerplay. Kind of a synopsis of his career. Just depends on his teammates to score and blames them when he can't. Doesn't make any plays of his own.
He is a power play specialist as he was in Winnipeg. Few teams can afford to have a player like him on the team but when he heats up he is unstoppable. Unfortunately, Matthews is better.

It's possible, not saying that.

But we both know that Porty doesn't like Laine. I haven't bothered to track who asked him these questions yesterday but if I had to guess at least Porty would have blown them out of proportion and context and texted the jackets players with some carefully picked quotes.

Nobody cared when Waddell stated it. It was accepted as fact. So it's all about WHO says it and how it's presented. Not about what's actually true.

This is the dumbest gotcha ever. Hearing that from an incoming executive vs a guy that was in your room are wildly different scenarios. Not even getting into the fact that a large part of Laines problems were caused by Laine himself.

Maybe his therapy has changed that, he has seemed more positive. But of course in this situation he should have just said "I sucked the whole time, so I had to leave them so they could flourish" or whatever the now angry fans would have wanted to hear instead of parroting Waddell.

If Boone Jenner got traded away and said what Laine said, then people would not have this reaction. We would be like "wow that team had a problem". It's because it's Laine and we can't imagine him being the one trying to improve the work ethic of the team that we're having this reaction. Granted, some of that is uninformed people still thinking he is a kid who just plays video games and doesn't backcheck. But I know every square inch of this issue and I don't buy the idea that Laine was that leader either. He was a problem player for the team.

You still haven't confronted the possibility that Portzline came to this position on Laine because of what players told him.

1+1=2 is true in wildly different scenarios.

They could both be saying "the door is green" and we all know the door is green. But we also choose to get mad when Laine says "door is green" because different scenario!!
