Laine is the epitome of failure and yet he blames Columbus, to say that the team is comfortable with failing during his tenure noting that Gaudreau was part of that team, adds even more fuel

Go score another goal whilst the opponent is short handed, everyone's impressed!

Maybe his therapy has changed that, he has seemed more positive. But of course in this situation he should have just said "I sucked the whole time, so I had to leave them so they could flourish" or whatever the now angry fans would have wanted to hear instead of parroting Waddell.
He could have just recognized the support he received from the team and organization. At bare minimum he just should have stayed silent out of respect for what the team had gone through and continues to endure.

This is as kind as I can be today.

1+1=2 is true in wildly different scenarios.

They could both be saying "the door is green" and we all know the door is green. But we also choose to get mad when Laine says "door is green" because different scenario!!
Yeah but Laine was paid good money to paint the door green and tripped and hurt himself. Waddell came in to paint the door green now.

Now Laine is coming back and saying someone else should have painted the door green, as if he himself wasn't the one to be tasked with painting the door in the first place.

I can't believe it needs to be dumbed down to this level but I'm trying to work with you here.

How? did the Devils draft the best player in the world and another player who Oilers fans always claim is a top 5 player in the league?

Think before you post.
How many draft lotterys have you won? How many top 10 picks?
I agree, think before you post

tampa, colorado, dallas, florida.
All those teams have had extremely high picks that are the foundation of their team

Now Laine is coming back and saying

He was standing in MTL dressing room being surrounded by people with microphones asking questions. And the parts I saw on youtube on habs pre game, he wasn't saying anything controversial.
He didn't have a press conference to **** on his teammates. He was asked a lot of questions by a bunch of people and one of them he answered like Waddell had done. Which is now a big issue apparently.

For some strange reason, there is a sizeable community of Jets fans that wanted to bring back Laine, when he was unhappy and wanted out of Columbus. I never understood this sentiment. Laine was definitely beloved by the fans, especially in his first two seasons. However if we really look back objectively, he never took it to the next level, and regressed due to off ice issues, starting in the 2018-19 season.

Laine always struck me, as a player that was gifted, but was relatively soft, and lacking the killer instinct. During the Jets run in 2018 playoffs, Laine was almost a non-factor. It was Wheeler, Scheifele, and Byfuglien who took their game to the next level. The problems did not begin in Columbus, that is for sure.

Incidentally, we got PLD in the return, and they both seem to have the same attitude problem.

I agree that Laine should not have answered those questions. Not a good idea.

But when Don Waddell said the same thing, everyone agreed. When Laine said it, everyone acts like he just did something unthinkable. Could have just been quoting Waddell basically.

So as much as I think he did a dumb thing, everyone complaining about what he said being so horrible need to do the same accounting for Don Waddell too.

If the observation they both made is wrong, then it should be wrong for both. If it's correct then why are we angry at someone stating facts that other people in the org have also stated?
They didn’t say the same things, or in the same way. And Waddell IS the GM, not another player. There is a difference.

And he certainly isn’t a player floating around most of the games on the ice, and bitching about every single coach we’ve had recently, when he’s off the ice. Your boy Patty literally was one of, if not the main reason that made the team borderline unwatchable the last few years.

Waddell was talking about players like Laine, or Laine himself. Literally everything is about them, not the team. Now he just needs to finish the job and get Merzlikins away from the team.

Laine knows it takes more than 1 person to paint that door, and so does Waddell. One of them is in the position to affect who all paints that door, one of them is just one of the painters.

They have a very different opportunity to affect the outcome.

He's Finnish you wouldn't understand
He just speaks his mind
He's in a slump
He's hurt
He played on a bad team
He played on another bad team
(Both teams improved when he left)
He had a death in the family
He has mental health issues
Fans hate him

Now, he had to do a press conference!!

Surely no other NHLer has went through this! We'll just continue to accept the narcissists excuses. Until he leaves Montreal that is.

Having a hissy fit because some wimp called you a loser sounds like woke behaviour

Actually, someone like you would think woke behavior is constantly giving somebody chance after chance after they quit on their team because they claim they have mental health issues. Someone who isn’t woke wouldn’t give them chance after chance.

Columbus had to get something out of every single day, they couldn't lose a day with their roster. They had been doing that the last two years and it did not work well. They need to get their culture going the right way, Anyone can see this.

Laine always rubbed me the wrong way. But a bunch of bluejackets players went behind his back and said he and Merzļikins are trash and need to go. How would you react to that? I know zach werenski is the only player around from that group that wanted to oust him, but it seems like Laine took an opportunity to express a bit of that disappointment there. Shit happens.

Love the Canadien and Blue Jackets fans fighting as though both teams haven't got out of the first round once in the last decade. Something about glass houses.

Signed a Flames fans.

It does seem bizarre for four so-called leaders to go after a mercurial forward with known depression issues and a goalie who watched his best friend die in an off-season accident. It turns out having the fans and teammates support Laine is working out for him, who would have guessed?

This could be true, and he was well known prick in youth hockey. He also has weird status in Finland, only Selänne has had that similar aura.

There are guys like Barkov, Rantanen or Aho but main stream media is all about Laine. Personally i don't mind if he talks crap but then he also needs to perform.
Are hockey players very big celebrities in Finland? Just curious if Laine is a big shot when he goes back home and they talk about him on the news and what not.

I'm mostly asking from a cultural perspective because I assumed Finns don't sensationalize/idolize celebrities like we do in America

Yup, he definitely wasn't supported. Good call tho.

I wish players showed more personality

No, not like that!
"Ungrateful narcissistc asshat" isn't a personality, it's a personality disorder.

I've been all in on going to bat for the guy since he got here and even after he left - I was more pissed at Waddell about the trade than I was about Laine. I had honestly believed he gave a damn. But to pull this complete bullshit? When most of us were doing all we could to support him because we believed in the guy? And he responds to that by throwing the team and the city under the bus, even after changes had been made to the situation he was in? Then abandons his new shiny replacement teammates when he's called out on it? f*** that and f*** him. Wasted effort on my part to have ever even considered giving him the time of day. I hope his hockey career crashes and burns and he ends up flipping burgers somewhere. This is not someone worthy of your attention or charity.

EDIT: On further consideration, walking part of that back. Only part of it. Rather I hope he doesn't end up getting the chance to take advantage of anyone else's chaitable nature the way he did ours.

It's reserved almost only for Laine. He has two things over the others. The shot and because shooting is the most exciting thing in hockey it never goes out of style. The other thing is the personality. Other Finnish star players are much more cookie cutter and you just can't get clicks for their antics because they don't do stuff like this. He has a big set of haters too, which doesn't really happen with the more traditional guys. Controversy drives media
