Great post, and I just got home from Safeway about 15 minutes ago. I could not believe my eyes. I have never seen the "bread shelves" so empty. Not one loaf of bread, not one. I commented to one guy who was also looking, that you'd think we're in a war, and people were buying survival supplies. I have a couple loafs, so I should be OK. Other food stuffs were quite normal. You could not get up the camping aisle at Canada Tire. Small propane canisters and camp stoves, propane lights, water jugs. It was like people are expecting the appocolypse. I bought my kid a new shovel to put her to work on the sidewalk. I will call it PhysED if school gets cancelled.
Grabbed a 24 of the Ducky beer, ripple chips, sour cream, onion soup mix and I have a freezer full of venison. I am not too worried.
I plan on shovelling my way to my BBQ and cooking if I lose power.
I recall 86 and 97 quite well. I am hoping this thing goes out with a whimper but sure looks nasty where it has already hit.
I bought my go to "easy meals" at Safeway, which is a BBQ chicken for $ 10.00, which I can get about 3-4 meals out of, with a little bread or rice. In case of blackouts or prolonged shortages, I'm OK for about 10 -14 days. Man that Safeway was absolutely packed. I could imagine the camping aisle at Canadian Tire.
I will do like you, if I get a power outage - I will shovel out my gas BBQ, or light the fireplace inside my house for heat, which I usually don't do. I'm ready for the survival test, whatever it takes.
Good exercise for your daughter, and give her incentive to do well in school, so she won't have to do manual work to make a living. The girls don't like that kind of work, so giving her a taste of real work, only helps her.
