I think the Devils still need to seriously consider how much of a load they want to put on Vanecek. He’s never started more than 40 games in a season. Schmid has looked promising so far, but can he handle 20 more starts over the course of the season? That would put VV at 52 GS and I’d be hesitant to push him further.
I’m sure Blackwood can start at least 30 or more games down the stretch. @Bleedred has given us enough reasons to have confidence in his bounce back after his return from injury.

I came to this thread expecting it to just be @Bleedred talking ranting to himself about how much Blackwood sucks, and I am mostly not disappointed.

Seriously though, I am comfortable with Vanecek and Schmid being the tandem even after Blackwood is healthy. I still don't expect Bernier to play ever again because hip injuries are the career death knell for goalies, my guess is he quietly retires at some point.

Happy he appears to be healthy, not so happy he might be getting back into games. At a minimum, Vanecek should still be the presumptive starter.
Another couple games like last night and you can already smell the justifications flying for why Blackwood can’t lose a job due to injury (never mind the dude is always hurt to begin with)

Oh for sure I’d say VV is the bonafide #1 . Shitty thing is that I can see them try to get MB going by gifting him starts and he can’t play up to VV‘s ability. Just like the Flames are doing with Markstrom. Markstorm has been shit and Vladar has outplayed him by a lot. Omly difference is , Vlackwood has never been the goalie Markstrom has been in the past. However , if the Devils had MB in mind being the starter , some teams are way too stubborn to go with their other guy, regardless how shitty he is and how well the other is playing. But in our situation , it’s not like we have 5+ million invested in Blackwood so they feel obligated to start him. That might save us from over playing him

FWIW, he actually did play pretty well in 5 of his 7 starts this year and Vanecek hasn't looked quite as sharp in the last few games. Bringing someone back who the team trusts to take more starts than Schmid might benefit Vanecek. Schmid has been great when called on, but it seems pretty clear that Vanecek is going to play almost every game until Blackwood is back.

he had 4 below average starts, so that isnt true.

Schmid has looked perfectly capable. Blackwood is not needed anymore.

I wonder how many starts before he gets waived ala Cory in 2019?

He’ll probably play just enough good games to get him in the net enough to absolutely kill us and flush point down the shitter.

It’s very easy to hate the worst player on your team, especially when he plays the most important position in the game and especially when he’s one of the three worst players at the position in the entire league.

He was really bad in the opener and against Washington. I'll grant you that he was average in the Ducks game too, but you're out to lunch if you're saying he was below average in the game when he got hurt.

league average SV% is right around .905-.906.

He had 4 games under that threshold.

I may have missed it, but any word on Wood?

hes fine. Practiced today. He was just sick last night. Probably had the shits lmao

Save percentage is not a reliable measuring stick for assessing a goalie's performance in a single game. I understand the hate he gets on here and a lot of it is warranted, but some of you take it way too far.
