Blackwood Traded to Colorado

The thing that pisses me off about this isn’t the player, it's what they gave up to get him.

Grier acquired Blackwood for a 6th round pick a year ago. That's it.

Today, CMac gave up a quality young NHL player (Kovalenko) with upside, a goalie in Georgiev that while he hasn't great the last year, we have seen can be quite good when he isn't f***ed up mentally, a 2nd round pick, a 5th round pick that can become a 4th round pick, and retained 14% of George's salary... and Blackwood is a UFA at the end of the season.

Just seems like a massive overpayment and terrible asset management.

Just tells you what negative value Georgiev had. They needed to move him and everyone knew it.

It had to be done, backed into a corner.

Now Cmac being in that fkn corner in the first place?

I'll never fully forgive him for the year of 2C shit, but winning cures all. Especially after seemingly learning that lesson with Jost..

That’s just not true. If you can’t find good beer here that’s a you problem.

I might have had a good beer in Denver and paid 13 dollars for it. ;)

My overall impression after cycling three months through the continent: most of the beer wasn't anything special.

There are goalies who can only good on bad teams who get peppered, give up 4 goals, lose, but walk away with a 915 sv% (the Marc Denis effect). Let's hope Blackwoods decent run is SJ will improve in a place where he doesn't have to routinely face 45 shots.

Its wild how on a matter of a week our goalies were just moved out.

Also will be interesting to hear how Rycroft and Moser, who have spent the whole season never blaming Georgie for anything, proceed to throw him under the bus.

bet they say adios and never mention him again

Most of the beer in the States suck.

Only big brands, but it's not even most anymore I think. The collective has forced shit like Bud and Coors into a pretty small section of the cooler.

Coors was very smart to buy Bluemoon and then keep their fkn brand nowhere near it.

Mfers leaving mass quantities of cheap ass coors light in my fridge while they drank other stuff I bought at the Poker tournament got old fast.

I've been told by people old enough to remember that Budweiser tastes nothing like what made it popular though.

Ok so this past summer Avs management needed to know that :

Annunen and his .928 sv% in 14 games played from last season - was completely inadequate to be the backup this up coming year AND that Kevin Lankinen and his .908 sv% in 24 games played from last year with Nashville was an aberration and in fact, he could easily take over starting duties and do well as his 1 year - $875K UFA contract with the Canucks can attest.

Sounds pretty easy after the fact but I don't remember too many Avs fans during free agency pounding the table to get rid of our back-up and pickup Kevin Lankinen.

The last time we acquired a Shark and just straight-up signed him before he played a single game, that worked out great ! :sarcasm:
Despite his numbers, the Avs brass was never high on Annunen and it showed in their behaviour towards him. Combine that uncertainty with the obvious lost cause that was Georgiev and they should have done something. I.e. packaged Annunen for a Georgiev upgrade, trade Georgiev for anything, and sign Lankinen for free. As one route. Or even just sign Lankinen as some insurance heading into camp, with the knowledge that him or Annunen were battling for a spot and one would be moved/waived.

Entering the season with Annunen and Georgiev as our duo was questionable and proved to be foolhardy. I even think Annunen could have been fine if we had a more stable starter.

Lmao that rebound control...

This is all hindsight, though. San Jose acquired Blackwood in June of 2023. Georgiev was coming off a season where IIRC he finished 7th in Vezina voting. Of course the Avs weren't trading a random pick for Blackwood to come and usurp the guy they thought had just solved their goaltending issues.

The worst thing that could have happened did in fact happen with Georgiev becoming the unreliable headcase who costs his team games and is disliked by teammates.

The price today is fine. It's Kovalenko and a 2nd, then a swap of a 4th for their 5th.

They didn't trade a 1st or Ritchie or Gulyayev or Ivan or Behrens or Nabokov. I don't see why there is any issue with this trade.

Hopes for Kovy, but he might have priced himself out way quick. Which is something not often brought up.

Most mass beers suck. I still like some Sam Adams from time to time...mostly their winter brew, but I always prefered Guiness, or some cheap mexican import like XX or Corona. Not necessarily great drinking beers but they are fantastic in a marinade with the holy trinity (lemon, lime and orange juice).

Get some fresh scallops, marinade them overnight in equal parts lemon, lime, and orange juice. Toss in a corona or XX, and a handful of seasoning. I use just a bit of oregano. I will salt them when cooking though. Anyways, after marinading over night, wrap them in paper-thin pancetta. Slather them in olive oil and flop them on the grill. I use toothpicks to keep the pancetta on them and to use as a handle while on the grill. I try and cook them 3/4 of the way on the first side and then flip them only once to finish them off. Scallops can be finnicky....you want to get them done, but they can go over really quick if you aren't paying attention.

Oh...back on topic.

I don't know about price since points pay in this league and he was on pace for less than 30.

I just think Kovalenko tried playing a top six, skill based game in a bottom six role when Bednar wants every one of his bottom six guys to play like Logan O'Connor.

I suspect Kovalenko gets a look in San Jose's top six to start.

He is a rental
Ideally he isn't. It would be nice if he settled in and we sign him to a 2-3 year contract at a decent hit to stabilize the position a bit until Nabokov comes over. Hell, even look at re-upping Wedgewood if he fits nicely too. There won't be a lot of better options in the offseason (as far as Blackwood goes)

We'd get along on food and beer, when is it above 70 degrees consistently up there? 🤭

Unfortunately...never.

We usually get a two week run of 80s and some days venturing into the 90s but it's hit or miss when it happens. Usually late June though.

At that point, we're talking salmon runs though. I'm personally not a huge fan, but most everyone else is and I must confess, I do like it smoked or in a dip.

[edit...something, something about keeping your wood on target. Or was that the topic on wood?]

I just don't think they were going to be ready to give him LOC money, and he definitely wasn't going to be on a completely burnable contract I think.

I like the player, but trades need assets. Getting a Kovy level vet shouldn't cost much. He wasn't going to continue to be ELC cheap is my point.

Blackwood has upside, and is coming into it. As a win now move, and not waiting all year to see more of a market. I'm absolutely fine with the price.

Growing up in Washington on the Columbia River, yeah, salmon smoked is the only way to go.

Lake Trout is really good smoked too. Think really fatty trout.

I can barely eat the farm raised shit. I'd brave the cold for Steelhead though. Or good halibut fishing.

did Makar go the other way? no? so its a win in my books. dont care what else we gave or received. just not having to endure Georgiev and his shenanigans anymore already made my week a lot better!

wait. actually I care about the other parts. I checked this Smith guy up and he looks like one of the dudes from the mythical Jamaican bobsled team. and he is also an enforcer type. I already love this man. I hope he stays with the big team all year. and I hope he also has some... tricks lol with his stick on the bench.

I swear to the holy sphagetti monster that he had untapped potential...
