Local media and fans have suggested for some time the Oilers so something about their goaltending which has been uneven for a couple of years now.

What would it cost for Edmonton to acquire MacKenzie Blackwood? Retention would also be handy to facilitate the trade.

:edmonton

MacKenzie Blackwood (G, $2.35 M AAV X 1 year) possibly with retention?

:sharks

??? What would be fair for San Jose? Interested in hearing what fans think is reasonable.

If your reply includes "massive overpayment" you're probably in the wrong thread and talking about the wrong player. :)

I'd prefer a retained Vanecek myself. Similar stats.

He's UFA at end of season. Prime bounce back candidate and could give Stu a push.

From the Askarov thread, seems like he may be ready to go from buses to planes.

That salary is harder to fit in though. He makes a million more than Blackwood. Both are UFA.

This depends on cost to me. I was a proponent of picking up Blackwood a while ago, I wouldn't be opposed to it. I don't think Pickard is a full time NHL goalie - or not one we can have playing every day while Skinner figures it out. Blackwood isn't going to be more than a poor starter at this stage in my opinion, but a Stu Skinner - McKenzie Blackwood combination might be an upgrade on what we have now.

Totally agree... we need another guy. Also, Pickard isn't necessarily pushing Stu. Stu has no competition. A guy like Vanecek or Blackwood could push him a little.

Agree the extra mil sucks but they may be more eager to get rid of Vanecek. I also have a bias.

Another one I want is Vej in Utah. 2.75 and free agent at end of year. Looks like he lost his job to Ingram.

If you want him now I’m asking for a second. Don’t want to rush Askarov into the NHL. If you want him at the TDL I’d probably drop the ask to a third.

What makes you think he's worth a 2nd? SJ gave up a 6th for him 16 months ago when he was younger and RFA, and all he's done since is get injured twice and allow 161 goals in 47 starts. His SV% hasn't been above .900% since the bubble season in 2020-21.

Edmonton is desperate and likely to overpay, but even then I can't imagine SJ getting more than a 4th + C prospect for him. He's not a good goalie.

Ah the classic Sv% on a shitty team argument.

There's a difference between what he's worth and what it would take to trade him. I certainly don't think Blackwood is worth anything near a 2nd and would be very happy with a 3rd. A 4th seems like a fair deal. But simply by being a warm body in the NHL, he contributes to Askarov's development, so he's worth more than that to the Sharks.

The wrinkle here is that I think any trade for Blackwood (or Vanecek) needs to return a third string goalie who can be a good AHL starter. I personally don't think it'll be too long before Askarov gets the call, he's been too good for the AHL and I think there will soon come a point where we just cannot justify keeping him down. But when he comes up, we need someone to be the guy down with the Barracuda, who are Calder Cup contenders this season.

I also suggested Vejmelka as a possible trade target for us a year and a half ago. He's had some consistency issues, but he always looks good against us.

We can include Colin Delia in any trade for one of your goalies if all you need is an AHL goalie. Or you could wait until we put Pickard on waivers and you could snatch him up. He wouldn't be kept up with Skinner and Blackwood on the roster.

Much respect to all players involved but Blackwood, at this point in his career on a decent team is a third option.

At this point, if either Blackwood or Vanecek were waived they would likely go unclaimed. Their value at their current salary is negative (barely negative, but negative)

And SJ unable to do another retention takes away one tool of moving them from the negative zone to the slightly positive zone.

So this is in the territory of the trade has to include someone of negative value going back (and then mid-to-low picks or low-grade prospects to even out the trade for whoever is parting with the less cumbersome negative value asset)
