I personally don’t care about Blackwood’s politics or choice regarding the vaccine. I do care that he can’t seem to stay healthy and when he has been healthy he’s been a sub-average NHL goalie.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't care what kind of person he was.

But yeah, ultimately it's just that he's a shaky, injury prone goalie that, aside from one stretch, does not seem to be a guy that can be relied on to make a save.

I'm not vaccinated (though not for political reasons), so I'm really in no position to criticize someone not being vaccinated. In the end, he did get both shots, so it's whatever.

Do I think teammates/people in the organization might have a rift with him over his hesitance to get it? Maybe. Though some players (Miles Wood) came to his defense afterward.

I'm not sure that over a year later there's many people involved with the team that still even care, especially since he got it done anyway.

I think I probably would have been mad about it if the guy were actually still any good, on top of if it cost him trips to Canada and we had to take Jon Gillies or someone like that up for those trips and got killed in games that took place up there, and it cost us a playoff spot.

I'm more worried about his inability to stop enough pucks, on top of his ability to even stay on the ice at all.

Can we change the title to the "Broken Record, Beating a Dead Horse, Get Some Therapy" thread?
Not until people like you (and I take numbers, I know who did it) stop asking me to eat crow after 1 or 3 good games by this worthless sack of shit.

I won’t capitulate until this worthless, suck goalie is out of the organization. That’ll be my therapy.

I wish we could trade worthless Flaccid Wood to the Rangers for Halak as soon as he’s cleared.

Trade him for Halak, we waive Halak and let either Schmid or a combo of Schmid/Daws take it from here and watch the Rangers get blown to smithereens more often than not when Igor isn’t playing.

That trade would get Tom Fitzgerald a statue and make him one of the biggest Rags killers of all time.

He might even be able to take out Gallant and Drury with that one bullet.

I think you’re taking it a bit too far. Organizational goaltending depth is extremely important. I’m fine with Blackwood being the #3 this season in case of injury or Vanacek/Schmid faltering. That doesn’t mean I’m advocating for resigning Blackwood.

I don't know that Mac would accept a role as a number 3. And it worries me that this organization seems perfectly ok sacrificing wins for the sake of trying to get him on track.

Who cares what he accepts? He’s under contract with the Devils for the rest of this season, no?

He won’t be the #3 here this year, unless he’s waived. If he’s the #3 that means he got waived or is on IR still.

He’ll be the #2 if he’s healthy enough to dress. At least after his probable AHL conditioning stint.

Even if Schmid falters then I think Daws is probably better than Blackwood. Even if they aren’t good I’m pretty sure they aren’t worse.

Blackwood stinks. Best case is he’s off the team when he returns from injury and the Devils trade for a capable backup at the deadline. I don’t think Fitz is an idiot. Like all of us, he is seeing what this team can do with real goaltending. He is not going to be comfortable with keeping Blackwood even as a backup in a playoff run

There’s no real need to move on from Blackwood until seasons end (or maybe if you get a good swap deal at the deadline).

He was at least passable so far this year. The one big question mark however is every year his season gets derailed by early injuries and his numbers go downhill. I would be a little concerned that happens here. The good news is the Devils have built up enough of a cushion standing-wise — along with Schmid playing well — that they can just be extra cautious and not force any early return. Let him get healthy, give him a backup role behind VV, and see where it goes.

The way VV has looked, I think there’s a case for swapping Blackwood out with a young goalie with strong numbers (for example Eric Comrie before this year) and letting Schmid/Daws/New Guy battle it out for a backup spot. Although Fitzgerald might genuinely have PTSD here and likely try to sign a quality veteran just in case.

It’s honestly impressive that Blackwood is sporting an even worse save % than last year…and the team has somehow managed to win 4 games in spite of Blackwood being in net.

The guy stinks and is not even a competent NHL backup.

The only reason he’s been “passable” this season is because the Devils were limiting teams to like a half a shot a game. .880 save percentage is not acceptable at all.

He can't stay healthy. That should be enough for everyone in wanting to move on.

Odds of him coming back 100% from this injury feel like 0 TBH.

I do think people are being way too quick to just give Schmid the backup job. He has been great but the sample size is super small.

I think the clear move is to trade Blackwood out in a trade that brings in a vet to backup Vtek and potentially spell him in the playoffs if he struggles.

Ideally it would be nice to just put Bernier in that role, but I'm not trusting his hips TBH

That's certainly fair.

My rationale for handing Schmid or Daws the backup job is for financial/cap reasons, if indeed they aren't actually better.

Suppose they're ONLY as good (or better yet, AS BAD) as Blackwood, having them at the low price they come at is much better money spent than paying Blackwood $3 (or is it $4?) million to play here next year.

I don't think if they're really any good, but I'm confident they're not any worse and if your options are between two cheap guys that suck and one much more expensive guy that's gonna suck, I think you'd much rather pay the cheaper guys that suck than the guy that's gonna cost either $2 or $3 million more for a year.

I do think with the recent run, which is showing who the hell needs him, among other things, the ship is about to set sail on us bringing him back next year.

But I do fear a hot streak of 15-20 games (which any goalie is capable of) gives management hope and they give him his qualifying offer next year.

Just my guess but I think Bernier is playing the long game. I expect he will be ready to go just in time to play a few games before the end of the season. I’m skeptical he wants to play more than the bare minimum of games to show he is worth a contract next season. The way goalies are in this league if he can play even four or five decent games he can probably get a one year deal from someone who has a decent young goalie in the AHL they are looking to shelter like the Devils with Schmid/Daws this season.

I do think it's normally unfair to really knock a goalie for a less than 7 full games stretch of .880%, because anybody can do that and a couple of really good games can shoot that way up over the roof. He had I think 4 solid to good games, but he also had two REALLY BAD games. I didn't think he played badly in the Edmonton game before he got hurt and left the game, but I could honestly have see the win streak being snapped that night if he had stayed in and if it weren't, you know he was getting the Calgary game a couple nights later and that's probably where it ends.

And they just couldn't stop playing him. It was heavily implied that he would have gotten another start between the Washington blowout loss and the Vancouver game, if he weren't ''Nursing'' and injury to his ''Elbow'' which was confirmed by him personally and by Ruff in the post game of the Vancouver win that he got. And he did miss practice the night before the Colorado game where Vitek got the shutout.

The Ducks and Islanders games were solid, but kind of rocking chair games. Vitek's had a couple of them too, like the Toronto game recently and Schmid had one of those against Arizona for sure.

I actually thought he was about to get a shutout in the the Islanders game, but got scored on with 5 minutes left. Not that I thought the goal was his fault, I'm just saying I really thought a shutout was coming.

And he played pretty good against the Sharks

What was kind of annoying was that he about to have another 1 goal against game to Vancouver, but did enough just to allow another goal to them in garbage time with a few minutes left that went off his pad and in.

I think he probably would have been better than .880% if he continued playing games, but I'm not sure he would have been much higher than .900%. His last 62 games going back to I think it's February 20th of 2021 are just absolute murder. He's an .892% since then.

And let's not forget, his AHL career was beyond mediocre. He did not have really any success in the AHL. His first season there was fine, but his second season was horrific and got him demoted to the ECHL for a time period. I remember the talk at the time (summer of 2018) was that there aren't many examples of goalies performing THAT BADLY in the AHL for a year that went on to have a successful NHL career. And that wasn't me arguing that, I was merely a spectator in those arguments and really didn't have much opinion on that one way or the other.

And outside of those first two years, it's not looking like a successful NHL career has been developing with him. His last season in the AHL was mediocre, but he performed well in his games in the NHL in that same season.

So that's why I'm not convinced that it was just the injuries. And when the hell isn't he injured to begin with? He was already nursing something with his elbow (obviously nothing major, as it didn't keep him from dressing for a single game) even before the injury that took him out.

This is extremely unlikely to me. Yes, sure, a goalie can get a contract like this, but it's going to be for not a lot of money and he won't get any runway at all. It's much more likely that Bernier has played his last game in the NHL.

I agree but my guess is he knows he’s likely cooked and his best chance is a very limited showing at the end of thr season.
