GDT: Blackhawks. Flyhairs. 3pm EST.

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

I do think both would have a better sv% on a normal team...

None of the 3 goalies actually have even a .900 EXPECTED sv% in terms of public models... now, all 3 have been below expected, but still, Flyers D play in a way that suppresses shots but not high danger chances.

If Ersson had played at Vezina level ~+1.5 dfsv%? He would be at around .905... and would get zero Vezina votes because of the type of shots they allow.

I have also heard from a few sources that the backend data from non-public sources that some teams use says that actually the Flyers expected sv%s are even lower than public models.
That probably means that, assuming you play the same system, you would need a top-level goaltender eventually no matter what. But right now, they need someone who can make more saves that they're supposed to. Ottawa went in for Ullmark because they felt the same way to become a playoff caliber teams, someone who can just make one more save than the other guy.

For sure... but I think whoever they get will likely get .900 or so at most and they will be scratching their heads why they performed worse than they did in previous years on other teams...

I also would not be shocked if Ersson especially went elsewhere and became a good NHL goalie.

They shouldn't have to spend a ton of money on any one they absolutely have to commit to. It would be different if they were playing higher in the standings. Whether it's taking a chance on someone that someone else is looking to move or just a free agent. Hell, they can bring back Alex Lyon and be reasonably confident you'll get a .900% goaltender, he's been better than that every season since he's left.
It all depends on what the brain trust wants/expects out of next season.

Not being in on Askarov was a pretty telling sign about this group. They think they can save the issue with a patch FA until Bjarnason or Zavragin are ready (neither of which are sure things, obviously). They're morons, so they'll almost certainly throw away money on someone in the offseason.

I also love how there is seemingly no learning curve for the power play unit, system, ...
I calculated how the PP% evolved since the beginning of the season (basically what was the PP% to-date after each game) and it only got progressively worse over the year with no hints of trending up

PP% league-wide to-date is 21.6%

Crazy part is they aren’t even trying anything different on the PP.

I truly believe Torts and Corky are both back next year.

The powerplay actually looks much worse if you ignore the first 9 games of the season, when the Flyers scored a bunch of PP goals early. They have easily been the worst PP team in the league since that point.

Lyon's about the best option that wouldn't involve us actually committing to someone long-term (or giving up our #1+ in an attempt to get Oettinger.) Allen will want more years, Andersen will be 36, which is dangerous, Samsonov is Samsonov, and things get materially worse from there.

I think he’s a backup who can take the net for a 2 week period when needed. Playing a system that doesn’t suppress high danger chances, whenever they do make the playoffs again, ain’t gonna be there long playing like that.

I do think that said more about what they think they have that it wasn’t worth premium assets, but they also came out of last season impressed with Ersson. That said, they also kept Sandstrom on the NHL roster last year because they were worried he’d get claimed.

Samsonov hasn't been over .900 since being in Washington, that includes this season.
