Proposal: Binnington for Skinner+

I just never see the Binnington or Gibson deals happening. I don’t think either guy should have much value based on full contract value.

Teams don’t have enough cap to pay full.

Team doesn’t want to retain multiple years.

Other than the 1st there is nothing interesting there, not gonna happen

Am I the only one that likes Akey and thinks this would be a pretty smart move to make given we aren't exactly contenders?

The downside is Binnington can absolutely steal a series or two. But our chances to make the playoffs as is aren't great.

I don't care for Skinner x 2 or Vinni much for that matter. But it checks alot of boxes and assuming there is no retention here it gives us a pathway to make sure Hofer/Ellis is our guy while we figure our consistency issues out.

Binnington's value is higher coming off of the 4 Nations. He showed what he can do with a good team in frond of him and that he can play under the pressure of the Canadian market. Skinner is the trade off, with the first and couple of prospects for St. Louis' retool. Suter adds depth for a Cup run at a low cap hit

Zero chance Binnington is pulling off that kind of value.

That's a Ryan Miller package for a goalie that is nowhere even close to Ryan Miller caliber. I'm not meaning this to shit on Binnington, I think he's a clear upgrade for the Oilers, but that is a crazy payment from the Oilers side.
People need to take note. This is the right way to do sarcasm.

The 1st and Akey are definitely valuable pieces.
The first is a year out (reducing it's value, albeit in a presumably stronger draft so that may be a wash) plus historically a late first/early 2nd pick has about a 50/50 chance of ever playing more than a handful of games in the NHL. Beyond the low to mid teens, no matter what people around here think, first round picks aren't 'that' valuable and certainly not those very late in the round (where presumably the Oilers plan on being).

How often do goalies bring back 1st rounders in trade?

Just to be clear Ryan Miller got a 1st rounder plus Tage Thompson - where is the Tage included from the Oil in this deal? Looks like lots of cap dumps instead.

Not all that often but every trade is different. In this specific situation, the first that's being offered is not 'that' valuable (presuming that with good goaltending Edmonton makes it past the first round otherwise what's the point). Plus the teams most often mentioned (Anaheim & St Louis) are dealing from a position of absolute strength. Solid arguments could and have been repeatedly made that both teams would be better off if they just keep their respective goalies. So if Edmonton really wants either of them, they're going to pay & pay a lot more than what Goalie 'x' was traded for previously...or they're happy to hang on to them.

Tage was part of the O’Reilly deal.

Miller was traded for a 1st, Carrier, and Chris Stewart. Unless you’re referring to a random pick the Blues got that somehow turned into Tage through other trades. I’m not sure if that actually happened as I’m going strictly from memory while typing this.
