Proposal: Big Moves for Ottawa

Take into considerations the cap projections of 95M.

July 1st UFA signings:
Mitch Marner 12M x 7y
(re-sign) Claude Giroux 2x 4.5M
(re-sign) Adam Gaudette 2x 1M
(re-sign) Nick Cousins 1x 1M
(re-sign) Leevi Merilainen 3x 2M
(re-sign) Tyler Kleven 3x 2M

Trades:
Thomas Chabot (3x 8M) to CBJ for Denton Mateychuk (2x 0.866)
Fabian Zetterlund (RFA) to (whoever) for 3rd round pick

Roster:

Tkachuk (8.21) - Stutzle (8.35) - Marner (12)
Giroux (4.5) - Cozens (7.1) - Batherson (4.98)
Grieg (3.25) - Pinto (3.75) - Perron (4)
Amadio (2.6)- Gaudette (1) - Cousins (1)

Sanderson (8) - Zub (4.6)
Mateychuk (0.866) - Jensen (4.05)
Kleven (2) - Yakemchuk (0.975)

Ullmark (8.25)
Merilainen (2)

Cap Hit: 91.481M

Marner brings some much needed offense, and while Chabot is really good (especially this year), his money needs to be moved in order to make room for Marner.

Getting a cost-controlled LHD that can move the puck for the 2nd pair, playing with Jensen, stabilizes the position. CBJ will lose Provorov this summer, need a LHD to replace him, and also have alot of cap to spare.

12 x 7 ain’t landing Marner. He’s getting 15+ if he’s not signed by the Leafs.

marners too cheap, we arent trading zetterlund for less than what we paid for him (especially since its been less than half a year lol), that defense looks awful lol (plus chabot has a 10 team ntc)

i also disagree with resigning gaudette but somehow thats one of the more realistic moves

nit picking here, but i don't see Kleven signing for 3 years at that amount. He doesn't score a lot of points, but coaches love big guys like him who are physical, and i think he will eventually be scoring 20 pts./year, and be a 2nd pairing/#4 guy. He's the perfect partner for an offensive Dman like Yakemchuk.

His playoffs will help him, but I think Emberson's deal is a reasonable comparison for a deal that only buys RFA years.

I am guessing $1.5-2m if 1-3 years, 3ish if it's 4 years, $4-5mil if it's 5-8 years.

I'd give him 2 years for sure, but at a hit of 1 mil with bonuses on top, take advantage of his age

I think there is a very fair chance that Gaudette earns less than $1.25m over the next two seasons, especially if he signs a 1 year deal. A deal like this would guarantee him $2m.

I really doubt any team pays him more than $1m a year. I would take him back in Ottawa on that contract because it's not my money, but I wouldn't sign him with a regular lineup spot in mind.

I mean, it's not gonna happen but that would be a massive change to the team. Moving out a 1B LD for a 1A+ RW would totally change Ottawa's composition.

True, was just expecting a bit more in the OP than a "OTT goes after Marner and dumps Chabot to make the cap work"

Why does CBJ make this trade? And if you think you're getting Marner at that price CBJ beats it by 2m.
