He implied that this means that Canadian NHL fans (or any high tax state in the US) can't complain about tax because the dollar is bad even though the tax thing was still a discussion point when the dollar wasn't good (or as bad anyway). The teams in no tax states still have an advantage in that sense.
I'd say he has a bit of a point seeing as NHL players are paid in american dollars. If you went solely on monetary advantage, they would end up with more take home in Canada....but still hurts them in the long run with prices and costs anywhere else but Canada.

But like I said.....we are in for a very ugly couple years up here. The NHL has the right to be worried, entertainment spending is one of the first things to be cut when people tighten their purse strings. And with a de-valued dollar, going to a game will only cost more as prices rise to try and re-coup the losses from the dollar.

The amount of people being laid off from jobs is also astonishing, our job numbers are abysmal.

We need an election, that's for sure.

I just got back from Vegas last night and my credit card is having a fit. Likely wouldn't have booked the trip if the dollar was this bad when I did.

Just become a U.S. state and problem solved
Well, I think technically we'd become 10 U.S. states. Which if you think about it, would scare the piss out of Republicans. They would never again win the electoral college, the senate and likely the House. I could see Alberta voting Republican and maybe Saskatchewan but we're too socialist up here. The court gets reformed with a democratic majority and here comes GUN CONTROL!!! Our Supreme Court has already ruled that anti-abortion legislation is unconstitutional (though I don't think that's as ingrained here). We have public healthcare, childcare, and pharmacare. We're far too left for them. We would wreck the shit out of them. They're more likely to send the Pacific and N.E. states out way than vice versa (unless democrats figure a way not to be complete frackups).

Bernie Sanders and AOC in '28 bitches!!!

Canada is right f***ed come 2025, and the NHL is right to be worried.

1. Our dollar is sinking fast...65 cents value likely before Xmas.
2. Housing in 2025-26. 70% of mortgages need renewed and fixed rates are rising...dollar down, costs up everywhere.
3. Immigration killing services.

There is no money left....we are hooped.

This will get very very ugly. An election won't save it....only turn the ship around slowly.

Tax and spend government has everything to do with inflation. There are like 6 taxes going up in 2025. Our dollar is getting killed, causes inflation, money printing the de-valuing of our dollar and we've been in an actual recession for a year. We are going into a depression.

Taxes and spending have everything to do with inflation and devaluing of the dollar.
The NZ dollar is also in the tank compared to the US dollar, despite having had a right wing austerity government cutting spending for over a year. This is more to do with the extreme strength of the US economy since 2021, than anything happening in Canada or Australia or New Zealand.

The Government is defending its economic record, while the opposition says their policies are to blame for New Zealand returning to a recession.

Economic activity declined again in the three months to September, with GDP falling by 1%. This follows a 1.1% decline in the June quarter.

The dip represented the weakest six month period for New Zealand’s economy since 1991, excluding during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Canadian $ = 0.70 USD
Australian $ = 0.63 USD
New Zealand $ = 0.57 USD

Never question the economic forecasts from a man who has been to Boone Jenner's farm multiple times and likely knows where every NHLer from North America played high school and/or junior hockey.

Not to make this political, but an election will not change, or would not have material changed where we are today. Don’t be manipulated.

I know and understand, this was somewhat tongue in cheek. Recently Trump made the comment that we'd solve Canada's problems if they became a state.

Obviously there would need to be quite a bit of planning to make it a reality. Having said that, I would love if our countries united.

They won't even make Washington DC a state because of how it would affect the Senate, so it's never going to happen with Canada's 40 million people and 10 provinces.

It’s never happening. It’s the same nonsense he spouts like wanting to buy Greenland.

Last polling I saw had Canadians at 13% wanting to join the US.

Maybe if you guys want to join Canada or something. That’s a lot of people to screech in.

The players benefit, yes, but the teams have to pay much more to make up for it (generally speaking) which eats up more of the cap, which puts them in more challenging positions.
The core problem is ticket prices

Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver could get away with setting prices in USD - maybe

Much harder sell in Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg and Ottawa.

You also have the Canadian TV contract coming up and Bettman will look to get that in USD.............

Team expenses eat 0% of the cap. Maybe a team like Winnipeg may be forced to move because they’re not profitable.

like.

There is a dip because of recent politics, but a) it wont last and b) our economy is based around a lower Canadian dollar, an election isn't going to change that. Parity is never happening.

Im happy to see you see say " dont be manipulated" as there is so much economic misinfo going around. The federal government doesn't really affect most of the issues people complain about, AKA housing and healthcare, thats on the provinces.

The real issue here is the NHL is dependant on Canadian money. This could be enough to tank to the cap increases. The NHL needs to figure out why so many American franchises dont make money and why it relies on 7 Canadian teams to make up most of its revenue. The Canadian market shouldn't affect the leagues revenue in a such a way that the other 25 teams can't make up the difference.

Maybe we as constituents need to demand better politicians to lead our countries....

You have to be a complete narcissist or incompetent in virtually every other field to want to subject yourself to the kind of scrutiny that we impose on public officials these days.

Did you write something on a message board in 2005? Well, guess what, it's coming out.
