Sports Media: NHL sees local ratings dip in return to full season
The NHL’s local TV story took a hit this season, as regular-season games on U.S. RSNs posted a 23% ratings drop compared to last year’s shortened season, according to Nielsen data analyzed by my SBJ colleague David Broughton. The main reason for such an extensive drop — only four teams showed...www.sportsbusinessjournal.com
Ratings were a .16 in a market of 2.13 million TV homes. Averages out to 34 thousand & change. My earlier 33,000 quote was from memory, so please forgive the inaccuracy.
Is my math wrong? Or are you just throwing shade at the market?.16, not 1.6 ...
Is my math wrong? Or are you just throwing shade at the market?
It would be atrocious if they're only pulling in 3400+ viewers a night. If 1.0 is 1% of the market, a 1.0 using Phoenix media market would be 21,300.
So a .16 wouldn't be 34k, of course.
It would be atrocious if they're only pulling in 3400+ viewers a night. I had it as 2.138 million x .016. If that's incorrect, clearly I don't know hot to calculate TV numbers.
YIKES. How is that even worth the effort or cost of producing the broadcast? LOL.Think of it like this. The NHL averaged 45k last season league-wide on U.S. RSN broadcasts (NBA 58k for those that like to compare.) Teams at the bottom, like the Yotes, kill the average. They aren't near it.
Much closer to 3,400 HHs than 34k HHs. (HH=Households)
just as an aside, but Hopi is a Northern Uto-Aztecan language just like Ute and Southern Paiute... it is generally believed that the Hopi and the Utes split off a proto Uto-Aztecan group in the Great Basin between 1000-1200 CE and the Hopi eventually adapted to the lifestyle and culture of the ancient Pueblo people. In any case, the Utes were very economically and culturally involved with their Puebloan neighbors.I don't think the Utes are that similar - they're on a different language group, and just googling some Ute artwork shows a very different style.
Now you could totally go with a Ute Indian-inspired design language - that would be quite interesting actually. But it wouldn't be Kachina.
The Kachina jerseys are sick. They should stay with the franchise even if they aren't in Arizona anymore. No offense to Coyotes fans, but let's be frank... does the Yotes brand have meaningful value in a new market?
I'm not really seeing a reason to keep the name if the franchise moves elsewhere. It's not like the Raiders and now the A's moving to Las Vegas, those were established and historic brands that admittedly have fallen on hard times as of late. The Yotes brand has had one deep playoff run in its history and not really any semblance of a national draw fanbase-wise.
There are coyotes in Utah and everywhere, but if they move a fresh rebrand seems like it be a smart move.
And count me in the camp that team names should always remain behind if an ownership group ups and leaves. Keep the name and iconography with the folks that gave a damn.
At this point, you can find Coyotes everywhere in North America except for the very northern reaches of Canada and Alaska. They’ve really expanded their range in the last 30 years. I saw one here in NC a few weeks ago. Several years back, I was camping in the western NC mountains and a pack of them was making a ton of noise in the middle of the night near the campground. Or at least according to the ranger, it was probably two packs with one warning off the other.
But yeah, iconically they’re still a western thing. Utah Coyotes would work… but I bet new ownership outside of Phoenix is going to want to eliminate those kinds of ties to what people see as a failed organization
Saw a girl at a vape shop last week who had a Coyotes kachina sweatshirt.Plenty of Coyotes here in Central Connecticut. I've seen more here in little over a year than I did while living in Vegas for a decade.
I was referring to actual coyotes....I think I confused you because I capitalized the word in my previous post, but I have a pack of coyotes here in central Connecticut that howls every night in my neighborhood & sometimes right in my backyard.Saw a girl at a vape shop last week who had a Coyotes kachina sweatshirt.
My mechanic spent some time there too, he had season tickets. I let him know what was going on last time I saw him.
I did, but the sweatshirt I still found humorous. I asked her and she wasn’t from Arizona.I was referring to actual coyotes....I think I confused you because I capitalized the word in my previous post, but I have a pack of coyotes here in central Connecticut that howls every night in my neighborhood & sometimes right in my backyard.
Most of the team sweatshirts I see are worn by a bunch of front running Brady fans who can't decide if they are loyal to the Pats or the Bucs...but I digress
Do they carry hockey sticks?I have a pack of coyotes here in central Connecticut that howls every night in my neighborhood & sometimes right in my backyard.
Do they carry hockey sticks?
Bravo! Well played, sir. This sticks were knocked out of their hands. They're howling for an interference call.
The Buzz.
Although, that sounds awful
They are the beehive state…. What about “Bees” in general?
Or do the Blue Jackets and Lightning (mascot wise) get to veto that?
Major League: Back to the Minors, the direct-to-video third movie in the series.
Didn't realize that. Turns out it was a total flop that made less than $4 million at the box office. No wonder I thought it was DTV. It was in theatres for like a week. Was in the theaters. Myself and two of my friends, all Major League and Major League II fans, were excited for it. Saw it opening day matinee, we were the only 3 people in the theater. Still got our entertainment value laughing at it but to say the least, it did not live up to the original two movies.

That is 1.6% of all TV households in the SLC metro area. This was for the 21-22 season. Haven't seen 22-23 yet.

Honestly, I didn’t know if the Bees/Buzz were still a thing or not.The Salt Lake Bees are the Triple-A baseball team in town. The name is already taken. And even more fun is that for a while they were actually called the Buzz to play off the double-z thing. And it was during that time they were the main team in Major League: Back to the Minors, the direct-to-video third movie in the series.
They would then become the new teams Reverse Retro'sThe Kachina jerseys are sick. They should stay with the franchise even if they aren't in Arizona anymore.
