As far as I can recall there were no best on best tournys in 12 and 13, so I don't see what relevance your point has.

In best on best tournys teams like Switzerland and Slovakia have failed to medal ever.

The point is, prior to those games being played, you would probably have imagined Canada crushing Slovakia and Switzerland, based on those rosters.

If you want to talk about ever, Switzerland has two Olympic bronze medals in 1928 and in 1948. But for a long period of time they've been pretty irrelevent. It's only in the last 10 years or so they've become relevant again. So they've had what, a whole two Olympics to prove themselves in?

Slovakia has 9 Olympic medals as part of Czechoslovakia. It's their history as much as the Czechs. They've only existed as Slovakia since 1993, and have only played in four best-on-best Olympics since, finishing 5th in 2006 and 4th in 2010.

Where are all the medals for "Team Europe"?

The fact that you like this format and think it's superior is a clear indication you don't like international hockey. You'd prefer an all star invitational which is fine. Just don't call it an international tournament.

I wonder why posters are self-conscious about this. There is nothing wrong with wanting to watch some all star exhibition where your favourite players skate really fast. No need to lie about the nature of this tournament though. The CyNick is a strange case of someone seemingly only caring about whether the NHL makes as much money as possible, which is his right I suppose but odd for someone who presumably isn't a stakeholder in the league.

If the NHL created some NHLPA Cup, with Team BC/Prairies, Team Ontario, Team Quebec, Team USA and Young Gunz... whatever. I would watch it and be entertained. But lets not pretend it's some World Cup. Even baseball knows their version of the World Cup is only half legit, because you don't need to be a citizen to play, so they call it the World Baseball Classic. If they called this the NHL World Classic or whatever I'd be a lot more amendable to idea.

For me its about creating the best tournament possible. The NHL has done that. The fact that the money generated goes to the NHL and PA rather than IOC gangsters is more about supporting what is just.

Why would it not be better to just get the best 100 players and make four teams?

You're pretty hung up on a name. Seems to be causing you a lot of grief. You just try just enjoying the quality of play. US v Finland was really fun. The fans seemed very entertained. A lot of money was generated. All is good.

That would be okay for an all star game. World Cup should have countries, or continents like the Ryder Cup or random teams like the Olympics has with the Refugee team which represents multiple countries.

Creating the best tournament is perfectly reasonable, but your whole argument basically boils down to you thinking that this format is the most profitable, and therefore the best. I don't see why the profitability of the tournament would matter when we are talking about what is the best format. You've also reacted to people wanting the tournament to be contested solely between nations as if that is a completely impossible idea, even though every past edition of this tournament has been in that format.

They have turned this into nothing more than an all star tournament. We have full national teams, national teams with age restrictions, a continental team with an age restriction plus players who may play against their own country, and a continental team minus its strongest countries. It's a nonsense format.

I'm hung up on fake teams and my team being one of the only ones not allowed to compete at full strength. But you are right. The current format is okay for an all star competition.

I'm not sure if it would fit under the "World Cup" umbrella but I'd love to see the other league champions* invited to a world championship.

KHL, NLA, AHL, etc.

They tried something like that after the lockout. I forgot what the cup was called but I think the Hurricanes played Magnitogorsk. Problem was the European hockey championship ran out of money.

Oh really?
Huh, I didn't know that.
That's too bad. I've always secretly wanted a more global league with the worst teams in the NHL getting relegated and the other league champions getting a shot in the NHL.

What bothers me the most is that the media really blew it here. There has to be some writer with logical thinking that knows very well this tournament is a gimmick and doesn't hold the same water as the other past tournaments. It is almost as if they got paid like a trained seal to try and get us excited about this.

Wait, are you trying to say that the media is biased?!

The media sell it in return for preferential journalistic treatment from the NHL.

Problem is you can't so that when teams have giant travels and require huge investment for that. It works fine in Europe for soccer where every city has a stadium and travelling is a bus ride away. We can't even get the logistics for USA travel of relegating teams, let alone the logistics of intercontinental travel(which players dislike a lot)

Best on best started in 72. It goes Canada Cup, world Cup, and olympics since 98. Those are the only meaningful tournaments/competitions.

Czechoslovakia has four Olympic medals since 1972 and has been the runner-up in the Canada Cup once.

It's funny when Canadians say the WC's means nothing, yet the players seem pretty happy whenever they win it.

Best on best or not, the differance between Canadas and Slovakias/Switzerlands World Championship rosters, is just as big (if not bigger) than the differance between Canadas and Slovakias/Switzerlands World Cup rosters would be.

The easiest sport to do it in would be American Football, and the NFL would probably love to have a team in London, but nobody would want to play for a team that has to fly 10 hours for away games.

You seem to be "hung up" on the "money generated by the NHL", that's odd...
Money isn't something that "gets generated" just because it "changes hands". Funny that you seem to believe in such a religion...

7 National Teams selected based on NHL player numbers. Whether it be # of NHL players available to the team or total GP or combo both, etc.

1 Team World; for the orphaned and snubbed. All 7 National Teams set roster then Team World invites anyone from anywhere. Lots of good players sitting at home. I honestly hate the idea of teams based on continent, totally arbitrary.

Good idea.

But I like the current format as well. We desperately need best on best tournament and World Cup is the closest thing.

Worst idea so far
