I feel Jagr used to generally be considered better/greater. I remember he placed ahead of him on a Top Czech NHL players polls series I did a few years ago. However, Hasek has received twice as many votes in my recent poll asking who's the Fifth Greatest Player ever. Maybe public opinion has changed over time; maybe Hasek is dominating him in the poll because most voters are voting for Crosby or McDavid and the sample size of votes for those two is fairly small.

I'm interested in seeing who wins a one on one between the two Czechs.

I always feel like Jagr is a bit overrated. But then I look at his stat page, and he was an absolute superstar.

I still pick Hasek. He redefined goaltending, and no one since has been anything like him. He's too unique to not pick him here.

Both are guys whose top 7-8 years are well up there but while they have great longevity I think they lose ground on some other greats in the 9-15ish seasons. I think I prefer Hasek for peak/prime slightly and Jagr for career slightly

Jagr was always a bit up and down after the pens years. Like the rangers years where he was everything from sub ppg to ppg and well over ppg with 50goals. But he scored close to 30 goals in his 40s (43, 44 what was it?) , I don't think there's many who can out do that, atleast not when era adjusted.

Jagr

I have it as:

Grezky
Orr
Lemieux
Howe
Crosby
Roy
Jagr
Beliveau
Bourque/Hasek/Ovechkin in some order

Not a huge gap or anything - but I do rank Jagr higher. Hasek's late start/shorter NHL career really hurts his ranking in all-time discussions for me.

If you are using fewer NHL games played as a factor, shouldn't Howe rank over Orr and Lemieux? Both of the latter lost significant time in their career due to injuries.

I think peak Orr/Lemieux are better than Howe. So it's a matter of peak vs prime/longevity, and I have both slightly ahead of Howe overall.

For Jagr and Hasek - I actually have their peak quite close. So overall, Jagr goes ahead.

Datsyuk has to be in there somewhere.
Oh he definitely is, I agree.

You know how Orr is in between Gretzky and Lemieux on my list? I'd say take Orr out, put Datsyuk in there...and then add around +100 to get his landing spot. Maybe 120

one is a player the other is just a goalie

Jagr wins by default
While I wouldn't put it as blunt s this it's really unfair to compare goalies and position players in so many ways.

For example there is zero chance that Jagr would have been sent down to the minors in his prime right?

While, obviously, I was joking, Datsyuk is definitely a top 50 player of all time. You saying he is out of the top 100 is asinine.

Others had better careers, but in terms of being the outright best goalie, Hasek is my pick for GOAT.

Jagr was arguably the best player in the league for a period, but I think that would have looked a bit different if several key players (Lemieux, Lindros, Forsberg) hadn’t been removed from the conversation.

Hasek > Jagr

What is your reasoning to have Datsyuk as 50th or even in the top 100?

I'm a huge fan of his but the best case I can really make for him is somewhere in the top 130ish area and the HOH section of these boards had him list at 128th in their recent top 200 players of all time and other players probably have passed him since then.

I suggest you read some of the arguments there and perhaps you might learn something as usually self proclaimed know it alls really don't know it all.

Just saying.

I'm curious wouldn't those 3 guys also overlap the prime of Hasek as well?

I get the argument for either player and some days I might take Hasek but I have a really hard time comparing goalies to position players as often goalies are team dependant and like I stated above there is zero chance that Jagr is playing in the minors at age 26 like Hasek did.

Or gets traded at age 28 for a 4th rounder and Stéphane Beauregard. (I'm sure most people are going to need to look this player up, right?)

Both players were in their peak when I actually cared, and both were pretty ridiculous to watch (especially live!). With that said, Hasek impacted the game like no one else could. It was a different game when he was in the net. Watching the Sabres -- 2 goals usually meant that you were at least going to OT, 3 goals was pretty much an assured victory. He was exciting. I don't understand how a goalie can be so exciting to watch and yet so good. Typically a top NHL goalie is a tactician, playing angles, reading the play, and minimizing movement. Hasek was orchestrated chaos.

As for the poll - the real winner? The 1998 Czech olympic team.

Sure, but Hasek was better than Lindros and Forsberg even when those guys were healthy and in their primes. That is a lot less clear cut when it involves Jagr.

Hasek and Lemieux is an interesting comparable.
I do not like polls comparing a skaters value vs a goalie it makes no sense
