I'm going to make a roster trying to not just be 4th liners/3rd D. Maybe this is more the disappointing/underwhelming team (also as many big names as possible)

09 Bertuzzi - 23 Kadri - 11 Kotalik
19 Neal - 13 Cervenka - 07 Amonte
07 Friesen - 20 Jankowski - 18 Brouwer
21 Leivo - 07 Lundmark - 13 Jackman

10 Phaneuf - 14 Butler
16 Wideman - 09 Aucoin
07 Zyuzin - 18 Bartkowski

16 Hiller
02 Vernon

I like this attempt. OP’s parameters make sense, but I’m curious who the worst 1st liners are and whatnot. Like, for the Sabres I’m pretty sure Vesey would be up there, because I think he got legit first line minutes for a bit. Risto as a #1 defenseman is funnier to me than scrubs who didn’t make the league long-term. That said, I’m too lazy to put the roster together myself.

If anyone does a Sabres one please quote me, I’d be curious to see it. I don’t even know a lot of these names for other teams, amazed they were all around for half a season+.

Finger was a defenseman. I'd put Arnason at 1C and bump Vaananen for Kyle Cumiskey.

Ranger fan since 1989. Half of these people were decent players and fulfilled their roles. Some were far better than that. Malhotra, Betts, and Moore were some of the top shutdown centers in the NHL at the time. Staal was a 1st pair defenseman for several years prior to his eye injury. McCarthy exceeded expectations and had a little skill to his game which most did not expect. Strudwick exceeded expectations as a 6-7 defenseman. Orr was an elite heavyweight when that role was still valued. Dunham was terrific in the 02-03 season and almost got us to the playoffs. Weekes was a mediocre backup. I'm not sure who Evans is.

Dale Purinton HAS to be in this lineup somewhere. Also Ted Donato, Stu Bickel, Alexei Gusarov, Enver Lisin, Cody McLeod, and Thomas Pock deserve roster spots.

Wow, I completely forgot about Simon Gagne on the Bruins lol.

I never thought Tinordi was that bad. He wasn't great but he was fine for a waiver depth pickup for a few games. We've had way worse defensemen in, like when we were dressing Tommy Cross for playoff games

This would be pretty close to mine.

Bulis was a solid 3rd liner and doesn’t belong … but he was replaced by Byron Ritchie and Ritchie does.

Marc Chouinard also absolutely has to be on this roster.

Cam Barker spent a full season as a Canuck and was horrific but didn’t get to 40 games.

Also Mark Messier played for the Canucks in 2000 which is good enough for me for him to make it.

I think my memory is clouded by that strange shift where Bulis was piggybacking dudes, but yeah, Chouinard beats him for sure. I had just sorted through all players over 41 games starting from 2000-01, so that's why I missed Messier and Barker.

Not bad! IMO Glass and Bulis were serviceable role players and Hordichuk and Brashear were adequate facepunchers so I would leave them out. My list:

Eriksson-Sutter-Ferland
Sestito-Granlund-Virtanen
Schaller-Vey-Dickinson
Isbister-Chouinard-Green

Sbisa-Gudbranson
Pouliot-McCarthy
Bartkowski-Miller
