I enjoyed the retrospective that NBC did awhile back, basically looked at the series in five year segments. The behind the scenes stuff with SNL is almost as interesting as the show itself.

I grew up with the early 90's cast, and there was a quote from one of the writers about the backlash that they faced initially. Basically that it was a culture shock that the comedy was geared more for the kids of the people who had grown up with the original cast.

I don't have a YouTube link handy, but out of recent seasons, the Rock making a child molesting robot is up there.

Also a big fan of Villasenor's role playing in bed skits and anything Stefon related (except his mediocre 1st sketch which didn't involve him on Weekend Update).

Was that with Ben Affleck? I’ve heard Seth Meyers talk about how hosts weren’t too willing to do a sketch with Hader playing Stefon since Hader would get all the laughs and the host would just be the straight man, so Meyers suggested Hader do Stefon on update instead.

It's been a minute since I've seen that sketch, but Affleck sounds right from what little I remember.

That tidbit about why they moved the character to Weekend Update is interesting. Never heard that til now.

I guess some characters just work better on update than in a sketch. Stefon is one of my all time favourite update characters, if not my favourite. Those bits were always so well written by Hader and John Mulaney.

The porn stars sketches with Vanessa Bayer and Cecily Strong were great. Very well written and quite funny.

I wonder who wrote this sketch. Pretty ambitious compared to most sketches.

Google tells me that John Mulaney wrote it with Colin Jost 10 years before they actually did it. It really does has the feel of Mulaney's stand-up in that skit. He was the host of that episode.

I wonder what SNL will be like when Jost leaves as the current head writer.

"This just in: Murder is legal in the state of California."

One of the best weekend update jokes ever.

I also enjoy one that goes something like this

“A little wrinkle in the trial for O.J. the other day as Johnny Cochran put on the cap that was found at the scene of the murders. O.J. likely hurt his chances when he got up and shouted “hey, careful with that, that’s my lucking stabbin’ hat.”
