Best Slap Shot

The problem is that I have never seen any proof of measurement for Hull.

I used to think the same thing. I knew he had the most monstrous slapper I had ever seen, but I was under the impression that the 118MPH thing was a myth.

A few people dug up the goods though.

Hull's Slapper scared the bejesus out of goalies and defensemen. Hull used to intentionally whip one by the goaltenders heads at the beginning of the games if he had no angle to score just to make them hear it whiz by their heads and hit the boards so they could think about it the whole time he was on the bench before his next shift.

A few quotes from those who stopped his shots

"Stopping on of Hull's shots with your pads is like getting slugged with a sledgehammer" -Johnny Bower

"His shot is like a piece of lead. One of his hard shots would break my mask if it hit it. I've caught one on my arm, and it was paralyzed for five minutes afterwards. Sometimes it drops five or six inches. you have to see it to believe it. Some goalies would try to grab one of Hull's bullets with their glove only to see their wrist snap backwards and watch the puck escape into the net" -Jacques Plante

In 28 years of being a hockey fan the best I've seen is MacInnis with honorable mention to Bossy.

However, it should not all be about speed when being a judge of slapshots because Gretzky's wasn't the fastest but man was it ever accurate!

I think Hull is the obvious answer.
MacInnis of course.
Iafrate. Wilson had a great slapper.
Guy by the name of Brown in the 80's. Don't recall his first name. Defenceman. Great shot from the point.
Orr had a hell of a slapshot as well. Overlooked a lot in that department. Very heavy shot and fast. Not much wind up at all.

Jeff or Keith, but i would say jeff who had a very hard accurate shot

gretzky had the best slapper i ever saw. his natural slapshot hat trick in 1997 at 37 is a prime example how deadly accurate he was for almost 2 decades

I still have the weight set MacINNIS used when he played in Kitchener. His strength came from tireless workouts - lots of pullups and curls.

Let's not forget the other Hull, Dennis.

He also possessed one of the great screamers in the league.

When it comes to accuracy, Gretzky gets the nod with honorable mention to Ray Bourque, who seemingly always got his point shots on net.

The thing about Dennis Hull is he probably left the most puck marks 15'+ wide of the net! Some people even rate Dennis's shot harder than Bobby.

A few people dug up the goods though.

I remember reading an article back in the 60's that they used some high-tech device to measure the speed.
It might have been a device from A.V. Roe?

Regarding Al McInnes not only was it probably the hardest but his wind-up was soooooo quick and his accuracy was great also.

Reading that article proves nothing because they talk about 96 mph backhands and 105 mph wrist shots.

Accuracy no doubt goes to Gretzky. The goal he scored on Vernon I believe coming down the left wing and ripping it top self. My God.

Didn't Iafrate have an unofficial shot clocked over 110?

Was Bobby Hull's shot clocked in the WHA and that's why the NHL doesn't count it ?

And he broke the boards. Could you imagine setting a screen for this guy?

Nice quotes, and no doubt true. For an example of a Bobby Hull slapshot and someone crazy enough to block it, check the video below at around the 1:00 minute mark. Can you guess who the player is before watching the video?

Which were clocked with official equipment

Because "official equipment" back then was perfect. The only way he was shooting 96 mph backhands was at full speed skating and I highly doubt that. Either way nobody has measured today's players shots while skating full speed so you can't really put up the alleged Hull numbers against anyone.
