2008 and 2013 were probably our best in recent times.

2008 we drafted 3 NHL regulars in Del Zotto, Stephan, and Weiss.

2004 wasnt too bad either with Cally and Dubi, though the Montoya pick was brutal but that was a pretty terrible first round overall for everyone after the first few picks.
2004 wasn't too bad, but looking back on it we had six - count 'em SIX chances to take David Kreijci :help:

Considering that they didn't have a pick in round 1 or 2, their 2013 draft was pretty awesome.

They grabbed 3 NHL regulars (Buchnevich, Duclair, Graves) in the 3rd or later. These were their 2nd, 3rd and 4th picks that year to as their highest pick was used on Adam Tambelinni who didn't make it.
had we only picked Guentzel instead of Tambelinni!

1982 was a good draft, getting Sandström, Granato and Miller

1981 had Patrick, Erixon and Vanbiesbrouck

1990 with Weight, Zubov and Nemchinov is probably the one I rank no 1 though

The problem the Rangers always have, is that they trade stars away too soon.
They didn't even trade Zubov too soon. They waited until he was whole ass top 5 for the Norris and then traded him.

Our best years were when we managed to draft 1 good player, like 1986 or 2009.

Compare to teams that have drafts where they get 2 or 3 foundational players

2020 could end up being very good. We need more out of Laf and Schneider, but they are both NHL players, and we could have NHL players in Cuylle, Garand and Berard. Maybe Rempe, but he's probably a longer shot than the others.

Like who?
Bruins, Lightning and Blackhawks were good for a long time, so I looked at their draft history.

Bruins drafted Kessel, Lucic and Marchand in one class.

Bruins drafted Bergeron and Stuart in another class.

Lightning drafted Kucherov, Palat and Namestnikov in one class.

Blackhawks drafted Seabrook, Byfuglien and Crawford in one class.

This doesn’t include other teams or examples where a team picked 1st or 2nd overall and then nailed a later round—lots of those (although not the Rangers of course).

No question, solid draft given the draft capital.

However.

Duclair is on his ninth team and for the most part, has been a freebie asset around the league to fill a spot on bad teams. Interchangeable piece. No real value exists there, despite the cumulative stats. You can pick up this type of player on the cheap in any FA class; not to mention reclamation projects are always in abundance.

Development is as embarrassing as the draft, the two go hand in hand with all our failures. There were a lot of players we drafted that should have been handled better early in their careers and it hampered them throughout their career. Our 04 draft wasn't bad, Montoya, Korpikosky, Dubinsky and Callahan. The issue though is that we can't develop skill. If you look at the types of players that succeed here its callahans, dubinskys, Kreiders etc

The 2022 could be a sneaky good draft given where we picked. Sykora, BMB and Barbashev should all have nhl careers and i agree the 2020 draft was good too...lot in there to work with.
