Perhaps a parallel approach would be to look at the importantance of positions during the last 100 years in 25 season segments. NHL and in the hockey world. Granted there will be overlap, always is.
Example, first 25 years with little substituition and lack of roster depth, forwards would drop back to play defence to rest or to extend a career - Dit Clapper.
Likewise, goalies seem to have been undervalued.

While goalies were expected to play all the games without a back-up on the bench, teams would lend a regular goalie to an opposing team in an emergency situation. See Roy Worters:

Jonathan Marchessault, 30 goals but a -21 is deemed expendable. Do not remember another expansion where a young,26 years old, 30 goal scorer, granted only once in his career, was exposed in an expansion draft.
