Clever response Daver.

You dont really need one if you have been a fan of the game long enough. He is second all time in points and missed 4 full seasons. He won multiple art ross's and should have more hart trophies. He had 3 lester B pearsons which area really the ones that matter most. Only 3 players won the scoring race for 21 years straight and he was one of them. He has over 2000 points when you include playoffs. So yeah he is underrated. His hardward suggests he is in the conversation for top 5 players ever and no one even brings him up in the conversation.
One word.....playoffs.

Jagr has a decent playoff resume but there is a reason Dan Marino isn't ranked as high all time among QB's and that's the superbowl.

I personally don't agree with it 100% as I think championships are won by teams and perhaps the star players on those teams are given too much weight for winning but it's pretty common across all major sports.

In the late 90's when he was in his prime the type.of stuff teams got away with against him was a joke. I remember a series against the leafs where he was literally tackled by Markov and Yushkevic all series long and there were no calls. Was sad to watch not good for the game. The DPE was at its peak when he was in his prime. Tough timing for a player when they are at their best.

Funny if anything the clutch and grab era was beneficial for Jagr because he had the body and power control game that excelled in the era.

Not sure he would stand out as much in the free wheeling 80s for instance.

I think he would be unstoppable in any era in his prime.

Timeframe here is pretty simple: 1998-2017. Starts in 1998 because otherwise it would be all Gretzky and Lemieux with rare exceptions or too early for a common fan, ends in 2016 because I feel 2017 is where McDavid becomes the consensus or near consensus pick. I’ll make a poll for every year.

It’s not about who swept every award that year but rather who you think was the best in his abilities even if he had a bit of a down year, bad luck or many injuries preventing from some real dominance. For example Forsberg didn’t play the entire 2001-2002 regular season but I’ll add him to the list for 2002.

Initial lists of players will come just from me, but I hope you will find them somewhat reasonable and objective. I might forget someone obvious, feel free to give your additional options. The only pure voluntarist decision of mine is to completely remove Lemieux from polls as it’s really hard to place him properly after the first retirement. Obviously there is an extremely strong argument for him being the best during all the missed and partial seasons, but still.
Actually, after 89 it was Lemieux, period.

I agree but the original point I was resending too somewhat inferred that the era was "harder" to score points and his skillset and body type was probably perfect for the era.

So how did players like Sakic and Forsberg add to their legacy with great playoff performances during the same time period?

Jagr was arguably has the 5th best regular season offensive resume of all-time. Like OV, his playoff resume is OK but he loses ground to players like Beliveau and Crosby, and loses even more to them when all around play and leadership are factored in.

I think the real difference in playoffs is that both Crosby and Ovechkin have very noticeable playoff years, Jagr much less so and that goes to gut feelings or the smell test for most people.

It also hurts Jar that when he was at his best his team sucked and scoring was really at a premium in the playoffs.

Okay, what's your rebuttal?
He was literally on the cover of NHL 99...

Every hockey shop in Canada was selling Bauer gear with Lindros' name on it.
Jagr was the better player. Definitely not the best player concencus at that period of time. Advertising is about as poor an argument for a player to be considered the best. If you want to talk about his production and scoring, impact on the ice sure we can discuss that.

Sure, but perhaps you didn't fully understand my original comment.
I said fans of hockey, if asked in 1998, would say Lindros.

I would agree that Jagr was the best player in the world in 1998.

But Lindros was still the most marketable player for the league at the time, and few if any believed he had reached his full potential at that stage.
