OT: Best Pizza in Edmonton

all this talk of pizza takes me back a few years , there was this pizza place beside where the goodlife is now (mill woods TC) served huge slices , like huge, what was that place and why did it close down?

I was just asked this the other day.

Wasn't it Quiznos? Dont remember them serving big pizza slices.

I guess you have never been to Italy then, you know, the home of pizza. The thick baked crust and cheese loaded pizzas are a North American thing. In Italy, pizzas and made thin using fresh mozza ripped by hand and placed randomly on a pizza. Its shoved in a wood burning oven for may 4 to 5 mins. You taste the fresh tomatos, basil, mozza, and whatever else you put on it vs the crust and cheese.

In fact, I suggest you never go to Italy because their whole idea of meal preparation is minimal fresh ingredients. Their pastas are amazing and much lighter then the North American fare.

I never actually log on to post, but I had to to agree with this. After going over to Italy and just loving all the fantastic thin crust pizza, finding Famoso's when I came back and moved to the city was great. I love a big loaded grease wheel as much as the next guy, but a well prepared margherita pizza is a treasure imo.

Chicago Deep Dish is my favourite late night pizza haunt in the Whyte Ave area. Not certain I have ever consumed it while sober, but I'd give it a gold star anyways.

Absolutely agree. Cardiac special bacon/mushroom/green pepper. Each slice weighs double what a normal pizza slice should.

It's a bit of a hike, but if anyone is in the Vermilion, St. Paul, Two Hills area, Derwent pizza is the best I've ever had anywhere.

Had Stone Wheel Pizza last night, on 119th street across from Petrolia. Used to be the Spartacus Pizza. Quite good.

Surprised at the hate for Famoso's. Guess people haven't been to Italy, it's the closest thing I've found to matching the recipe's from there. One of the better pizza's in the city for sure.

It's also got a nice atmosphere and ready when you are type of service.

Been wanting to try LovePizza for a few weeks now, hopefully soon. Takes the thin crust approach and mashes it with non-traditional toppings.

I think it just depends what people enjoy. I tend to like both NA style and thin crust.

Sometimes Famoso is exactly what I'm in the mood for.

Sometimes I want a meat monster loaded with cheese where each slice weights 2 pounds.

meme of the thread.

Don't like Famosos, never go to Italy, you'll hate it. lol Overreactions.

I think its OK to not like a ripoff chain and still be able to appreciate Italy. I doubt either that in Italy they charge 16bucks for that thin crust with nothing on it.

"Quality ingredients" lol

Any ingredients, any toppings at Famoso would be a start..

Finally tried Rosebowl tonight. Pizza arrived cold. Sent it back. Came back cold again. Was flavourful, but the service blew so I can't put it in the same ballpark as Capital. I don't think I've had a bad pizza there ever.

Someplace off the beaten track which is very good but gets no mention is Tilly's in Tofield. It stacks up against the best in Edmonton and is probably less expensive to boot.

Never get delivery from there. You got to pick it up or eat in. It's downtown so not exactly convenient unless you live close by.

Wasn't talking about your post specifically. Earlier in the thread some posters took my head off for not loving Fomosos real Italian like thin crust pizza and saying I should never go to Italy as I'd hate it.

What I hate is getting ripped off.

Dollar cost of a Famoso pizza is probably just that. Meaning for 15bucks that's a nice tidy 15 times mark up.

I used to work with a guy that told me Famoso was fantastic so I decided to give it a try. I went to the South Common location and it was decent tasting but the toppings were so scarce it was laughable.

This for the Win.

But hey, its the best single slice of pepperoni in the world imported from Sicily so you better love it.

Fair enough. Honestly though it's pretty close to being on par with authentic Italian pizza.

I was paying 8-10 EURO's for it over there so the price isn't far off.

Lot's of times though the pizza itself was more of a side course. You'd get a salad or pasta along with it to complete the meal. Something Famoso doesn't do that well.

Not sure if you've ever been to Italy or not, but pizza in Italy is really very underwhelming, unless you like pizza with just tomato and a few leaves on it. You'll be lucky to ever find a pizza in Italy with more than two toppings on it.

Not putting that down or anything, obviously its their food and they get to set the standard, but its just not how I like my pizza. That said, nothing is worse than pizza in Japan. Just an vomit inducing list of toppings and sauces. I have no idea how anyone can gag that stuff down.

The funny thing is I actually like Tony's Pizza which is also thin crust and authentic Italian but everything there just tastes better. Better crust, sauce, cheese. For a place saying they use only highest quality ingredients I don't taste it at Fomoso's.

Chain restaurants are often all about cost cutting and selling disappointment on a plate.

Yeah. Fomosos is chalk full of strange toppings ideas as well. Really I want butter chicken or pulled pork on my pizza never..

and I like butter chicken. But I don't like fusion for the sake of it.

Tilly's is great, very similar to Capital imo. A throwback to the 70s-80s pizza joints.

Famoso's is more a place to drink wine, and have a bit of pizza with it. A piece of tomato here, a piece of tomato there, hey there's a piece of salami. Maybe the pasta is good.

Hey, at least butter chicken and pulled pork are from the meat food group. Try fish eggs and squid slices, sprinkled with seaweed and slathered in mayo (and when I say mayo you have to have personally sampled the mayo in Japan to know how far removed from actual mayonnaise it is). Does that sound appealing to anyone?
