Since the '67 expansion, what season is the 20th best offensive season by a non-Big Four (Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr, Howe) player?

People generally think of points scored when they think of "offense," but really, you can consider things like scoring chance generation, effective neutral zone transition game, effective forechecking that causes turnovers, good puck possession in the offensive zone to be part of a player's offensive game.

Things like back checking, defensive play and positioning, shot blocking, body checking to knock players off the puck outside of the attacking zone are irrelevant here. These are things to consider when voting in the best two-way seasons since 1967 polls series.

Originally, I wrote this post disagreeing with you, the gist of it being that Jagr's season was bouyed by an insane first half. When I thought it out, I ended up casting a vote for your nomination, because he still played 75% of the season, battled through injuries, and won hardware.

1999-2000 Jagr had 14 goals and 19 assists for 33 points in his first 15 games (a point in every game). Then dealt with groin and hamstring injuries throughout the next few months, affecting his play and seeing him miss some games. Then missed 9 games due to the hamstring injury. The thing is, despite missing 19 games overall, he played through a lot of this. I believe he actually sustained the first groin injury in game 12 of the season, then went out and popped off for 9 points in 3 games, before exiting a few minutes into Game 16.

He had 70 points in his first 38 games (39 team games) and held an 18 point lead over Nolan, whose Sharks had already played 5 more games up to that point. He already built a 30 point lead over #10 (75% lead).

Considering he still won the scoring title in real life and that already carries a lot of mystique in the midst of four consecutive scoring titles, I think it's possible that a healthy 1999-2000 Jagr season would be seen as his greatest season. Even if he dialed back to 1.50 PPG and played 80 games, he very well could have finished with 133 points, a nearly 40 point Art Ross win, and possibly even the Rocket, and of course the Hart he so narrowly missed out on.

And if that happened, 1999-2000 would have gone off the board within the top 5.

Great points! thanks.

Its too bad, though, unfortunately these polls dont have enough voters. Im curious if the history of hockey board woulve garnered more. Was a good idea!
