Agreed on Arcade Fire. To the band's credit, I gather that they tried to get back to their roots with this one. Bringing Nigel Godrich on and focusing on arrangements that are maximalist, hook-focused and instrumental was the right way to go. I feel the same way you do, for the most part - definitely enjoyed some parts of it (Lookout Kid, Age of Anxiety I & II), but didn't love The Lightning or End of the Empire suites. Overall, it was fine. Certainly better than Everything Now, but not really approaching the reverence I have for their other 4 albums.I was a little disappointed with the recent releases from Arcade Fire and Toro y Moi. Both have made albums I would consider very formative for my musical tastes. Both Funeral and Causers Of This were unlike anything I had heard at the time and got me seeking out similar artists. And I think they both built off those amazing debuts with even better, more fully realized albums later on. But I haven't really been into their recent albums and that trend has continued.
I really like Age of Anxiety 1 and 2 from the new Arcade Fire. I think that captures some of their old magic. I found the rest of the album pretty forgettable.
The new Toro y Moi feels very much like a jam record. Very loosely structured, lots of "real" instruments. Not as much in the way of melodies and hooks. He's a long way from his chillwave roots at this point and I just prefer that sound more I guess.
A couple more:
Angel Olsen - Big Time 6/3/22
Read the review on Pitchfork this am. Sounded interesting. I like this single. Don’t think I’ve heard this group before.
It’s been a pretty underwhelming year so far. I haven’t really been blow away by anything.
