I haven't heard this yet but Norwegian alt band returned with first album in I think 8 years and it has good reviews so far.

Great start to the year. Big Thief, Spoon, Animal Collective, and especially Black Country, New Road all hit it out of the park.

Also worth diving into, if you haven't:

Jake Xerxes Fussell - Good and Green Again
Saba - Few Good Things
The Reds, Pinks and Purples - Summer at Land's End
Cities Aviv - Man Plays the Horn
Rolo Tomassi - Where Myth Becomes Memory

Wow, Beach House didn't get Best New Music from Pitchfork for their latest. They had quite a run with Devotion, Teen Dream, Bloom, Depression Cherry, 7 all getting it. I haven't heard the final chapter yet but I've loved the first 3 quarters of it, they can do no wrong for me. Superstar is one of their best songs ever.

I feel left out with so many people praising the latest Animal Collective. I'm a big fan and think their run from Sung Tongs to Centipede Hz with all the accompanying EPs and solo albums was incredible. They still might be my answer if someone asked me for my favourite band. But the new album just isn't it for me. Its by far the least surprising and interesting AC album for me. They were always a band that reinvented themselves with each release but this one sounds like Strawberry Jam made by guys 15 years older without the youthful excitement. Songs like Rain in Cups or Man of Oil that they've made post Painting With were more engaging for me than anything on the new album. Listening to it a few times did put me in the rabbit hole for older AC stuff tho, I've been really into the Avey Tare solo albums lately.

Don't laugh, but Avril Lavigne's new album "Love Sux" is really good if you like her to begin with. It's not deep or anything, just a lot of fun and a return to her 2000s punk pop roots. It's probably her best album in 15 years. It's a guilty pleasure.

The new Aldous Harding album , “warm Chris” is quite good if you dig folk music. Never listened to her before seeing her on pitchfork this morning, but I’m a fan.

VR SEX are audio/visual provocateurs who transpose the identifiers of death rock, synth punk, post-punk, ambient, and ethereal soundscapes into an audit on technology and its imprint on our collective psyche. Comprised of visionary mercenaries Noel Skum (Andrew Clinco of Drab Majesty), Z. Oro (Aaron Montaigne of Antioch Arrow/Heroin/DBC) on vocals and drums, and Mico Frost (Brian Tarney) on synths and electric bass.

Okay now Destroyer's new album "Labyrinthitis" is my album of the year. His best since Kaputt imo, which is one of my favourite albums ever.

This is the opening track. A lot of his stuff has reminded me of New Order but this one REALLY sounds like a modern version of New Order and I love it. Bejar is so good at album openings, Chinatown and Rubies being some other good examples.

I've been obsessed with Fit for an Autopsy's "Oh What the Future Holds"
It's deathcore or melodic death metal. I don't usually like more extreme vocal styles but this album really hooked me.

(only caveat is that I skip track 1)

Just had a boatload come up, including, finally, the Wet Leg album, which feels strange to think about because of how all of their singles have hit.

I haven't really loved much that's come out this year, and haven't loved the records by bands I typically enjoy (Big Thief, Father John Misty, Destroyer, White Lies) as much as their previous releases (except Arcade Fire as I'm relieved they finally returned to their own sound, so it's better than the last couple)... however, THIS record absolutely RIPS.

-Primus put out a new EP yesterday. Will give it a listen this upcoming week.
-Kirk Hammett's EP drops today (Happy RSD by the way!)
-Toro Y Moi is next week
-Warpaint, Kendrick Lamar, !!!, and Cave-In all have albums in May

The biggest news is Viagra Boys who some of us have spoken about here have a new album in July. That's so old school The last album was early 2021 so they probably used pandemic time in Sweden which didn't have shutdown to write and record. I used to love when bands would be active, touring and found a way to sneak into the studio for a few weeks and knock out a new album while their chops and creative juices were actively flowing.
