Need to bring him back. He's exactly the type of player we need MORE of; players with skill AND size (that actually use it).
For all of his purported skill, do you know how many times he has scored over 30 points in his career?
He hits to hurt, and I'd argue that with a little more ice time he'd hit 20 goals over 82.
He hits to hurt? Are we watching the same player? Considering that he will be 30 years old next year and that his highest goal scoring season was 16, why would you think that suddenly he can improve enough to be a 20 goal scorer?
Callahan being gone is an even bigger reason to bring him back as a net front guy on the PP
Not saying to bring him back or not, but he is a dime a dozen player and can be upgraded from.

I think a team that has very limited cap space, needs help down the middle, and lacks offense from the blueline, shouldn't make upgrading their bargain 3rd line LW a priority.

I really don't think we are, considering apparently he's going to be 30 next year and he doesn't throw the body. Now that Callahan's gone I'd argue he's the best hitter on our team that isn't a defenseman. He literally finishes EVERY check possible, and as hard as possible

Yeah but he only plays like an effective 3rd line winger! Why would you want that on your 3rd line? :sarcasm:

That was never the statement. He has been a decent 3rd line player this year. That is all that he is. He is playing much to the way that he has his entire career. He has been a decent 3rd line player. And if he wants to be paid as such, great. To me, he can be upgraded from.

Yes, he can be upgraded from, but so can every other player. You're not gonna find an upgrade at a similar bargain price.

A question for those who were mindless spewing "5 teams in 6 years" in the last Pouliot thread:

If Callahan signs with a different team in July (his third in 4 months), will that eliminate the possibility of him being a useful player?

I don't think that they are comparable on any level really.

Poo was traded from Minnesota to Montreal.

He was then allowed to walk after the 10-11 season.

Boston signed him and let him walk after the 11-12 season

Tampa signed him and let him walk after the 12-13 season.

When three teams in three consecutive seasons let Callahan walk, then we can compare the two.

Tampa only let him walk because he had an unusually high QO. They had interest in keeping him but didn't want to give him the QO.

And just to be clear.

I like the guy. He's one of the few UFA's that we have signed in recent years that has come in and performed up to expectations.

He hasn't dogged it, and he hasn't exceeded what was expected. He's come in and produced what we expected him to produce.

Same thing with Gaborik. We signed him to be a goal scorer and he came in and in 2 of three seasons scored goals. He did not perform above expectations, but he did not disappoint either.

The sad part is that we have been conditioned as a fan base that when a guy comes in and does his job he's looked at as exceeding expectations.

Poo hasn't done that.

And It's not so much that Poo is being replaced with a better 3rd liner.

It's that we are looking to acquire a top line LW slotting Kreider on the 2nd line and Hagelin on the 3rd line....Hagelin who happens to be better then Poo.

Failing the ability to improve the top line LW, bringing back Poo would not be a bad decision.

rationalize it how you want.

There's ways of keeping guys without qualifying them.

You offer them a multi year deal at less than the QO number giving them financial security.

Tampa did not do that thus allowing him to walk.

So with three teams it's a grave problem, two teams is no problem at all? No gradient there?

Yes, every player who has ever been let go by a team had that happen for the same reason: because the decision-makers thought the cost of keeping exceeded the benefits.

The Rangers determined Callahan was worth more in a trade than re-signing. The Lightning decided Pouliot wasn't worth the risk of a large arbitration award.

BTW, Pouliot will not be 30 next season. He's 27 now, and according to my projections, he should have only one birthday in the next year.

Lets revisit this in two years after Callahan signs one year deals with two different teams.

But right now even if Callahan signs with a third team in July the situation is not comparable.

The lightning decided, the Bruins decided, the Canadiens decided.

Not sure about you but I'm beginning to sense a trend.

Pouliot doesn't hit very often and doesn't go out of his way to find people, but when he hits, he hits hard.
That is quite a bit different than stating that 1) he is the best hitter on the team 2) he ALWAYS finished his checks 3) he hits to hurt.

Sather has quite a penchant for coming up with astute player personnel moves. Just look at his track record. ONCE again, he unearthed another hidden gem.
