If you showed me that replay and stopped it when Tavares hit the ice, I’d say it was a cheap shot for sure.

But everyone’s body language after the play kind of tells a different story. We’ll never know what Bennett said to Tavares, but the way he said it seemed pretty nonchalant and Tavares didn’t look to the ref to do anything about it. Nor did Bennett look like he was ready to defend himself from retribution.

Leaf jokes aside, the guys on the ice usually jump in pretty fast if there’s a real issue. For everyone to just kind of stand around and get ready for the next faceoff, suggests it was incidental contact between two guys who had their eyes on the puck instead of each other’s skates.

I guess body language is subjective. Tavares looked to me like a parent who is disappointed at his son's life choices but also knows it will never change.

The Leafs will more than likely overpay him for his services. If Tavares was at all interested in signing a 3yr/15M deal, he would have signed it already. But he's more than likely asking for 7+, which is why there is no contract as of yet.

7 years would take him to age 41. Since Gretzky and Ovechkin records are not in any danger from Tavares, I doubt he will see that term.
