I wasnt up in arms about him playing the 3rd line. If anything, I was up in arms about so many posters taking a leap of faith into believing this guy was a viable 3rd line option -- especially when it came at the expense of bashing a guy who has been able to hold on to an NHL job for a decade +.

Ferriero played well the other night. Good for him. Ill have to see him put together a month of good NHL hockey before I can even think about him being a longterm option.

But the "HA! I told you so!" stuff after 12 minutes from a journeyman AHL'er with less than 100 games of NHL experience is whats typical here.

There are posters on this board who follow hockey outside the microcosm of the Rangers and the NHL.

Ferriero was a very good NCAA player, he was good with the Sharks. His AHL production has been steady. Sometimes there are players who need a chance and have to wait for jobs to open.

Rupp is not a 3+ line player. He lacks the mobility, he lacks the hands.

Arnott would have been a good addition if he were in shape. He wasn't enough for the Rangers liking. But he is also a very slow player.

Rangers need the kind of speed and tenacity that a no name like Ferriero can provide. If he fizzles out, but contributes to the Rangers getting back on track while he's here, then so be it. Worry about it if he does/when he does fizzle out.

Beauty of bottom six players is, they should be interchangeable/replaceable.

Rangers need a little more luck with health. Kreider being hurt and Hrivik being hurt doesn't help.

Sather is most likely searching right now for another bottom six option.
 
We need guys like Ferriero and not like Rupp. Speed and some sort of size and skill is needed. Not mindless meat sack fighters. Not anymore.

Please dont put Rupp in the same boat as Brashear, Orr, Boogard. Rupp can play. He uses his size well, he drives to the net, is good down low. He gets the job done for a 4th liner. However, the problem is he has been used a little bit on the 3rd line.

Rupp used to be a good 4th liner. He's lost all is speed and pretty much is in the boat with Brashear and Boogaard now.

He never had much speed so I'm not quite sure what you're talking about. The 4th line does not get a lot of minutes. He hasn't looked out of place. He intimidates and plays a strong board game. He has been fine. Brashear and Boogard could hardly handle a puck let alone worry about their skating abilities.

I haven't seen him intimidate or play a strong board game since last December. The 4th line doesn't get alot of minutes because they suck.

Hmm....5 games in. Asham suspended for the 1st one and was hurt for another. He has had good legs, has dropped the gloves, and almost scored the other night. Halpern has also had good legs, hasn't hurt the team while being on the ice and that's all you can ask of him. Rupp has not hurt the team either and I really just don't think you're paying any attention when he is on the ice either. He has been strong at times on the puck. He won't be great every time, hence why he's on the 4th line.

The 4th line has not hurt us. They are expected to spell the first 3 lines for rest without giving up a goal. The critics need to relax. This isn't a video game, you're not going to have a 4th line of hagelin-stepan-kreider.

If you think the 4th line sucks with Rupp - Halpern - Asham, well, it'd seem to me you have unattainable expectations for a 4th line.

You mean when he threw a big hit behind the net (which he was getting called for a penalty on even though it was clean), then jabbing brodeur who flopped anyways, and then proceeding to through down Bernier in a series that wasn't over yet? Yeah I think that's what he was talking about.

They're capable for resting the top 9 without ruining the game. That's about it. It's not a group that can change momentum like New Jersey, Boston, or LA's 4th line.

Okay and you hope that the moves you have made in your top 9 outweigh opposing teams 4th lines such as...i don't know...Rick Nash, Marion Gaborik, and Brad Richards. Not to mention the internal drafting of guys like Callahan, Stepan, and Kreider.

Yes, thats how I remember it.

Torts rarely plays the 4th line anyway, so expecting too much out of them is a moot point.

We seem to romanticize New Jersey's 4th line because they hurt us in the ECF's. Meanwhile it was Bernier's brainless hit on Scuderi that effectively ended their cup chances. Be careful what you wish for.

You're right, they weren't very good. Yet, they were still better than what we've seen out of our 4th line this year so far, which is pretty sad. Granted that it's still really early and Asham and Halpern both need to learn our system. Nonetheless.

They havent been difference makers, but they also havent hurt the team either. I've thought they've handled the role well. What did last year's 4th line so better?

Pass to Mitchell-dangle-ignore open man-dangle-dangle-turnover.

Seriously though, I don't think the fourth line has been particularly bad. Rupp looks the same as last year, Halpern is an upgrade over Mitchell and Asham is fine. I want someone better than Rupp on the wing, but it's not like the fourth line is this team's worst problem.

Rupp had one of the sickest stick-handling sequences of the night on Saturday. He has some actual hockey skills. But he is S L O W so should only be on the 3rd line in an emergency or to change things up.

Tawnos, you know better than to get worried after just 5 games. Even if we were 0-5 I think the 4th line would be the least of our worries. They have not been bad.

He is slow. He shouldn't be on the 3rd line. But he definitely is fine on the 4th line. He gets 9-10 minutes a night. He doesn't hurt the team and like you said he has some hockey skills. He can hold onto the puck at times. He is a big body and he doesn't get knocked around easily.
