Horse Racing: BELMONT dates move to AQUEDUCT; SARATOGA opens July 11

Game Winner and Improbable, Bob Baffert's top two KY Derby probables, are both slated to run in the San Felipe at Santa Anita on March 9. He is labeling the possible matchup as Clemson vs. Alabama. The faceoff would indicate he is trying to avoid Oaklawn and traveling to-and-from Arkansas.

Instagrand, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and owned by former Boston Scientific CFO Lawrence Best, is also scheduled to start in that race.

• A light Wednesday schedule. Some tracks had adjustments in part to Monday's national holiday.

Tampa Bay (Florida):

• Race 8: A Todd Pletcher starter won at 13-to-1. Pletcher doesn't always send his best to Tampa Bay and Willie Martinez rode, not one of the trainer's usual go-to riders, but still... Pletcher at 13-to-1.

Gulfstream (Florida):

• Irad Ortiz, Jr. won three more times. At one point, he had won six of seven starts. He was an incredible 16 9-3-3 at one point. That would mean he was on the board 15 of 16 starts. Just imagine the profit with crazy show bets.
• Tyler Gaffalione won three times.
• Luis Saez, who is amid two 5-day (racing days presumably) suspensions and who was the leading rider at the meet, is scheduled to be in Saturday's Grade 3. That is his only mount listed from today through then. Saez has not ridden at Gulf since February 10 and has only ridden twice , both at Fair Grounds (Louisiana) on Feb. 16, since then. The general rule of thumb is a jockey can ride during suspensions but only in stakes races and most tracks have reciprocal arrangements. Thus, from February 11 through February 23, he would have ridden a total of three times and just once at Gulf.

Sam Houston (Texas):

• Race 4: There were eight states represented among places bred for the 10 entered.
• Race 8: 25-to-1, 5-1, 90-1 and 20-1 topped a $.10 super that paid over $4,700.

Turf Paradise (Arizona):

• Race 1: A 9-year-old mare ran. She had 8 lifetime starts, all in 2013, the last year in which she ran.

Aqueduct (New York):

• Manny Franco, the meet's leading rider, went 7 4-3-0. First or second with all seven starters is a purdy good day.
• Heman Harkie broke his maiden It was his 37th mount. And came the usual festivities for a rider's firs twin:

Gulfstream (Florida):

• Jose Ortiz went 7 3-2-1.
• Irad Ortiz, Jr. won twice. He has won 23 times on the last 7 cards. He leads the meet with 98 victories. Only four riders have won 100+ races at the track's Championship Meet.
• Jason Servis has trained the third most wins at the meet but his percentages are outrageous. He has won at a 47% clip and in the money 69% of the time. This is the Championship Meet. Even leading trainer Jorge Navarro can't match those numbers at 26%/58%. Chad Brown, the reigning Trainer of the Year, is 29%/59%.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):

• Race 8: Larry Jones did it again! With consecutive starters at Oaklawn, he won with 62-to-1 and 23-to-1 bombs. Today's winner was ridden by Kelsi Harr, a 10-pound bug who broke her maiden in her first attempt, last year at Canterbury (Minnesota). She is an Arkansas native and will likely never forget this moment on her home track; not will I. The winner, a 3-year-old filly which is generally considered Jones' expertise, paid $48. The cowboy strikes again!

Aqueduct (New York):

• No repeats: No jockey or trainer won more than once.

Tampa Bay (Florida):

• Race 2: Spinoff (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher), who was off since an August race at Saratoga, opened it up in the stretch and had the look of someone awaiting bigger things. The fractions were good, not great but Johnny V.'s presence for one race at Tampa Bay is an indication.
• Race 8-9: Gary Wales, who began the meet at 0-for-47 before winning last week, won both ends of the final two races. I am not sure the most recent time he won two-in-a-row, perhaps when he rode at Suffolk Downs (Massachusetts). He rode recently at Emerald Downs (Washington). That 0-for-47 is ancient history.

Gulfstream (Florida):

• Irad Ortiz, Jr. won four times. He has been victorious 27 times on the last 8 cards. He gets the cream of the crop oftentimes but he has been producing.
• Emisael Jaramillo won three times. He has the 5th most wins at the meet and is an excellent 21%.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):

• Race 5: Larry Jones' only starter on the day kicked it up a notch in the stretch and won. Jones has been victorious with three of his last four starters at a tough meet.
• Race 9: Six of the nine horses were claimed following the race.
• Favorites: Favorites were beaten seven times in nine races. Oaklawn is the place for bombers and the unexpected.

Santa Anita (California):

• Race 1: A very close finish in which Eddie Haskell (Joel Rosario/Mark Glatt) upset Stormy Liberal (Drayden Van Dyke/Peter Miller) who has earned $1.95 million and won Breeders' Cup races and who was being prepped for the World Cup.

• Manny Franco, the meet's leading rider, won twice but he failed to hit the board in five of seven mounts.

Tampa Bay (Florida):

• Race 9: The winner wired the field despite being on just a 4-day layoff.

Gulfstream (Florida):

• Rainbow Six: The main portion remained a carryover but all winners collected $59,000+.
• Handle: Over $16,000,000 was wagered on the card.
• Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Jose Ortiz combined to ride seven winners. Irad won four times to up his record to 31 wins the last nine cards. Jose won three times.
• Todd Pletcher won three times including two stakes races. He finished 7 3-1-2.
• Race 11: Prince Lucky (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Hal's Hope in comfortable fashion.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):

• Kelsi Harr, who I mentioned a few days ago after she won on a Larry Jones starter for her third lifetime win, appears to have escaped serious injury after a fall.

Santa Anita (California):

• Flavien Prat added three winners to total 40 wins at the meet, two behind leader Joel Rosario.
• Race 8: Vasilika (Flavien Prat/Jerry Hollendorfer) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Buena Vista Stakes as expected. The 5-year-old mare won for the 11th time in 13 starts since the beginning of2018. She won for the 15th time in 30 career starts. A 53-to-1 bomber, the longest shot on the board, came in second.

Aqueduct (New York):

• Rob Atras is putting up some of the most staggering numbers at any meet. He is 15 9-3-0 (60%/80%). The 34-year-old Canadian-born Atras, who trained at such places as Assiniboia Downs in Manitoba, has made quite the impression especially for a newcomer. • Kendrick Carmouche, who has over 3,000 wins, returned to racing today after a serious injury in September at Kentucky Downs.
• Small fields: Due to the weather and the time of the year, the card was nothing spectacular. Still, the $2 Pick 6 paid over $11,000 which is not chump change. Even though no bombs won, favorites only won three of the eight races.

Gulfstream (Florida):

• Card: A rare 13-race card.
• Handle: $11.3 million wagered.
• Jose Ortiz won four times with 10 starters. However, he failed to hit the board six times.
• Irad Ortiz, Jr. won just once with 12 starters.
• Roulette: I do not believe the newly created roulette bet is meant for average days. Perhaps it is better suited for events such as the Kentucky Derby. In the first three races, the pools exceeded $1.5 million but that included under $200 combined for the roulette bets.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):

• Races 8 and 9: Jimmy DiVito won the last two races, his only starters. He doesn't have a large stable but is a fine trainer. He is now 12 6-1-0 (50%/58%) at the meet. Strong numbers.

Sunland (New Mexico):

• Todd Fincher trained a winner for the 1,000th time when he won the $100,000 Mine That Bird Derby. Hustle Up, a 3-year-old New Mexico-bred, was ridden by Shane Laviolette and improved to 10 8-0-0.

Santa Anita (California):

• Handle: $10,000,000.

Tough news for the connections of Maximus Mischief who is sidelined indefinitely with an undisclosed injury. He created buzz around Parx (Penn.) as a possible Kentucky Derby entry and certainly this weekend's Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream (Fla.), in which he was a probable, would have been indicative one way or the other. However, he was pulled while training yesterday (Feb. 25). No word on the length of his rest.

Feb. 26 update:
Maximus Mischief is officially off the Triple Crown trail. The good news is he could race this summer. Trainer Butch Reid may have had his one shot at the KY derby. Same principal owner as Afleet Alex who has a special filly in Jaywalk.

This weekend's Fountain of Youth (Fox Sports 2; TVG) is a stepping stone to the Florida Derby and eventually the Kentucky Derby. All eyes will be on Hidden Scroll who mesmerized following his only race. Signal Man is high on many KY Derby lists. Bourbon War, who could top my ticket, Code of Honor and Vekoma are others who have been touted. This race will separate the field. A huge 50 points towards entry to the KY Derby is awarded the winner. The card will be drawn later this week.

Aqueduct (New York):

• Kendrick Carmouche won a race for the first time since September when he was injured during a race at Kentucky Downs.
• Samuel Camacho, Jr., brother to Tampa Bay's top rider Samy Camacho, lost all 31 starts in 2019 entering the day. He is now 2-for-34 after a 2-win day.
• Race 1: Mike Luzzi, in his only ride of the day, defeated a 1-to-5 shot and paid $11.20.

Gulfstream Park (Florida):

• Luis Saez, the meet's leading rider before a double suspension, returned to a full schedule but lost on board all five mounts.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):

• Favorites: Eight of nine favorites lost. The old adage about Oaklawn was in full effect. Favorites should be considered but there are other options awaiting.
• Race 9: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $50,000. Oaklawn is a tough track but it has value like few tracks can match.

Santa Anita (California):

• Chalk: All eight races were won by the favorite.

Aqueduct (New York):

• Race 1: Mike Luzzi, in his only ride of the day, finished second to a 1-to-5 shot. Yesterday in his only ride of the day, Luzzi beat the chalk with similar odds in the opener.
• Race 4: Robbie Davis trained a 35-to-1 winner, his first victory since 2017 in 30+ starts. He and his children Katie and Dylan had ridden the horse exclusively prior to today's win by bug Joey Martinez. The horse opened it up in the stretch. Just a few minutes later, Katie won at Laurel (Maryland). Dylan won later on the Aqueduct card.

Gulfstream (Florida):

• Race 6: The $50 tri paid over $2,600. The $1 super returned more than $35,000.
• Race 8: Stefanie on Fleek (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) won and paid $22.40. A huge sum for those connections. Velazquez has won 7 of his last 19 starts.
• Race 9: Irad Ortiz, Jr., the leading rider at the meet and the reigning North American Jockey of the Year, and Nik Juarez were both handed suspensions.

• Race 11: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $12,000. The $.20 Pick 6 returned more than $29,000. More than $350,000 was added to the Rainbow 6. That tells me tomorrow's pot will grow substantially with the popular Fountain of Youth card.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):

• Robertino Diodoro was a perfect 4 4-0-0 including three wins in which David Cohen rode.

Aqueduct (New York):

• Junior! I expected Junior Alvarado to have a top day with some of the primary competition elsewhere. He had three winners including the feature race. Royal Albert Hall, trained by phenom Rob Atras (a stunning 19 10-6-0), won the $100,000 Bernardini Stakes. The winner snapped a 23-race losing streak and won for the 3rd time in 41 starts. Alvarado also won race 7 from the far outside post with the longest odds on the board at 17-to-1. He tracked down the 3-to-5 favorite and for a top trainer in Kiaran McLaughlin. When Alvarado is outside, he is a most dangerous rider. Junior totaled 5 3-1-1 and smiled almost uncharacteristically which showed he was enjoying his day.
• Favorites: Won just once, even losing in a 3-horse field.
• Race 9: The $.50 Pick 5 paid more than $21,000. The $2 Pick 4 exceeded $19,000.
• Race 8: The $2 double paid over $1,200. The $1 Pick 3 paid over $3,300.
• Race 7: The $1 Pick 3 paid over $2,800.
• Race 6: A 37-to-1 shot wired the field....in New York! So much for winter racing playing warm to favorites.

Laurel (Maryland):

• Race 5: Creepy the Crab hit the board for the eighth time in 34 starts but alas no win again. He is now 34 M-3-5. Eventually he will break his maiden and when it happens the party begins. The hunch bet of the day based on a name. Go Creepy Go.!

Gulfstream (Florida):

• Today's card: It is days like this that elevates Gulfstream among the elite tracks in the nation. The 14-race card had over $31,000,000 wagered, a track record for this event. I mentioned in yesterday's review that the day had some potential but I never considered $31 million.
• Luis Saez is back. He was 10 3-3-1 today. He had recently returned from two 5-racing days suspensions.
• Race 14: Zulu Alpha (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Michael Maker) made some happy in winning the Grade 2 finale. The $.20 Rainbow 6 returned more than $147,000 to all winners. The $.50 Pick 5 paid more than $16,000.
• Race 13: Code of Honor (John Velazquez/Shug McGaughey) won the $400,000 Grade 2 Fountain of Youth and gained 50 points towards the Kentucky Derby. The win elevated the colt to almost a virtual lock to make that field; the Florida Derby is likely next. The ride was perfectly timed by Johnny V. who excels in these races. He beat my pick, Bourbon War, who was a 10-to-1 morning line sent off at 4-to-1. The lightly tested Hidden Scroll, who was sent off the favorite, finished fourth and will be heard from again but I felt from the onset he was a little mismatched in just his second career race.

• Race 12: Jeltrin (Luis Saez/Alexis Delgado) was by far the longest shot on the board and won the $200,000 Grade 2 Davona Dale at 51-to-1. She paid $105.00. Saez picked up the mount from Leonel Reyes who was injured earlier in the day. I don't know much about the trainer but he has less than 15 lifetime wins. Jaywalk had nothing and was a surprising flop who failed to hit the board. Bridge jumpers were aplenty and succumbed in unison as show prices were $34, $22 and $15. Wow!

• Race 10: Of the $2.7 million bet, more than $1.3 million was added to the Pick 5 pool.
• Race 9: The opener to the Rainbow Six. More than $792,000 was added and the jackpot exceeded $1.3 million.
• Race 6: Recruiting Ready (Luis Saez/Stanley Hough) was sent off at 1-to-2 and was one of the stars of the card. He won for the 7th time in 18 starts and received a Beyer figure of 105 which was the highest issued for today at Gulfstream. Hough is an impressive 12 5-2-2 (42%/75%) at the meet. He has over 2,000 lifetime wins.
• Leonel Reyes won the opener but was removed from his mounts later in the day due to a foot injury.
• Joel Rosario had a bad day. He was 7 0-0-1. That is putrid.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):

• Race 8: Amy's Challenge (Alex Canchari/McLean Robertson) improved to 10 6-1-1 in winning the $100,000 feature race. The trainer, one of my favorites and who is based in Minnesota, has a nice 4-year-old filly. She looked superb, set a track record in 1:03.01 and won by more than eight lengths. Good for him!

• Race 5: The winner paid $82.80.

Santa Anita (California):

• Weather: Sloppy and ugly day with rain. It has been a tough week for southern Cal racing.
• Handle: Exceeded $9,000,000 for a less than stellar card.
• Mike Smith won two of his three starts. He is 5-1-3 with his last 10 starters.

Winx: Star Australian horse sets world record for Group One wins

• Australian racehorse Winx has won a world record 23rd Group One race to stretch her unbeaten streak to 31.
• The seven-year-old is set to have two more races before she is retired with next month's Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick likely to be her final outing.

• Dylan Davis won three times.
• Race 7: Rob Atras is apparently human. His starter finished seventh. He entered the race 6-6-0 with his last 13 mounts.

Laurel (Maryland):

• Trevor McCarthy won three times on five mounts.

Tampa Bay (Florida):

• Handle: Over $5,000,000.

Gulfstream (Florida):

• Handle: Over $13 million was wagered today on the 13-race card. Yesterday over $31,000,000 was bet.
• Luis Saez had his second straight 3-win day.
• Race 3: The winner paid $32.40 but the roulette win only paid $3.40. Proceed with caution.
• Race 8: The $.20 Rainbow Six pool exceeded $1.1 million when more than $439,000 was added. Each winner collected over $35,000. The race itself offered intrigue when a 19-to-1 winner who went off 211-to-1 in his prior race, withstood both an inquiry and objection. The runner up was ridden by the very capable Brian Hernandez, Jr., who seemed to have misjudged the finish line. If so, that is a no no.

• Paco Lopez, who was issued a 30-day racing suspension, has mounts scheduled on Wednesday.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):

• Race 5: Serious I Candy won and paid $24.80. In that the always very stylish Ingrid Mason was the winning trainer adds to the script.

Santa Anita (California):

• Joel Rosario thrives on the west coast. He won four times today and finished 6 4-1-0. He was awful yesterday in Florida. He will regain some east coast success as the year advances but for now he is devouring much of southern Cal.
• Edwards Going Left (Joel Rosario/John Sadler) won for the first time in 14 months and the 8th time in 19 starts in winning the 4100,000 Tiznow Stakes. It was a "gutsy" performance as stated by the track caller.

• Santa Anita will be dark this week until Friday. The track was not running Monday through Wednesday and announced today that Thursday's card will be canceled due to expected inclement weather. Saturday will be a mandatory payout in their Rainbow Six bet and also a card that includes a Kentucky Derby prep race. Santa Anita has had rough few weeks.

Super Steed, the upset victor at Oaklawn last month, is off the Kentucky Derby trail due to a bone bruise. Damn! I was rooting for Larry Jones. The horse could be back in training in 2-to-3 months.

Code of Honor

I wonder if travel is going to be a determining factor. Stay in Florida and race at Gulf and then perhaps Kentucky or go to New York from Florida and perhaps eventually Kentucky.

Code of Honor, the winner of the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes on Saturday at Gulfstream Park, came out of the race well and will make his next start in either the Grade 1, $1 million Florida Derby at Gulfstream on March 30 or the Grade 2, $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct one week later, trainer Shug McGaughey said Sunday morning at Gulfstream.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve is a 35-race series that awards points to the Top 4 finishers in each race. The top 19 or 20 point earners will earn a spot in the starting gate for the 145th running of the $3 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade I) on Saturday, May 4, 2019. One invitation will be extended to the top point earners in the Europe Road to the Kentucky Presented by Woodford Reserve and one invitation will be extended to the top point earners in the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. The Kentucky Derby field has been limited to 20 starters since 1975. At least 20 horses have entered the 1 1/4 mile race for 3-year-olds every year since 2004, and 18 of the last 20 years.

This weekend, the stakes for the KY Derby are significant. All three races in the U.S will be aired on Fox Sports 2 (FS2) from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm ET with the winners getting 50 points.

Gotham: Aqueduct (NY)
San Felipe: Santa Anita (CA)
Tampa Bay Derby: Tampa Bay Downs (FL)​

There are also two KY Derby preps tomorrow (March 6) in Europe to be held at Kempton (England) and Dundalk (Ireland) with the winners getting 20 points.

In the Gotham, expected runners include horses trained by Bob Baffert (Much Better), Todd Pletcher (Federal Case), Steve Asmussen, Kiaran McLaughlin, Jerry Hollendorfer (Instagrand is headed east) and others including Ben Colebrook's Knicks Go, Rudy Rodriguez's Not That Brady and Danny Gargan's Mind Control. This race should be a doozy and a good one to bet.

The San Felipe Stakes will likely be a shortened field. Jerry Hollendorfer has Gunmetal Gray in this race. Bob Baffert will probably enter his two high-profiled colts Game Winner and Improbable. The field could be less than seven deep. UPDATE: Canceled. Racing at the track has been canceled due to track conditions. As mentioned, it has been a bad few weeks for southern Cal racing.

The Tampa Bay Derby should include two Florida-breds: Well Defined and Win Win Win. Dream Maker, who has potential, and Sir Winston are both out of Mark Casse's stable. Todd Pletcher, Bill Mott and Dale Romans among others could enter.
