Bell Media Exploring Sale of Tsn

Yeah if I owned any broadcast tv channels or radio stations and I could find some schmuck willing to pay for them when they're less than a decade from being obsolete I'd take it and run
Yep that’s why Amazon and other companies can’t wait to get their hands on sports broadcasts.

The feds have previously refused to sell Canadian entities/business to foreign companies.

PCS to BHP in 2011 is the most notable example, but there are lots of the years. The feds are more concerned when it comes to mineral/security-related items, particularly when China is involved.

Can the feds step in? Absolutely. Will they? It comes down to the circumstances of the deal. If TSN keeps offices in Canada and provides Canadian TV coverage, they might allow an American group to buy it.

The most likely purchaser is Rogers, which the feds will gladly line up to allow.

Why would the feds allow Rogers to own both national tv sports networks when they forced Bell to sell Sportsnet after Bell bought TSN?

live sports are now one of the only valuable markets for TV/radio. While everything else can be streamed at ones leisure and be ad free/skipable etc, live sports are unlikely to ever go that way do the importance of watching live.

Plus TSN does have some streaming possibilities (although the interface does pale in comparison to sportsnet), so i wouldnt say TSN would ever become obsolete. The contracts with other sports are worth a ton, see college football. I bet SN would love to get their hands on the chance to broadcast CFB
You can also stream live sports. TV/radio is only surviving due to blackout restrictions or people not comfortable using streaming services. Once those barriers are gone, there will be no value left in traditional broadcasting methods.

Streaming services are going to replace the traditional broadcasters as these services look to beef up their content with sports to attract subscribers.

Blackout restrictions apply to streaming just the same, so that will have zero affect as a reason.

I am happy to have lived through the golden era of TSN the last few decades. I suspect talent will haemorrhage as part of this process.

I could see folks like Overdrive crew just starting their own podcast. Would get tons of listeners it's their most popular show.
I’m surprised tsn lasted after Roger’s got the nhl rights in Canada as national broadcasters.

I’m surprised they are still around. I haven’t tuned into tsn since about 2013 outside of the wjc and the one game a year the oilers play against the sens.

There are really only there major players in Canada in the traditional TV space: Rogers, Bell, and Corus (Global TV, Showcase, W, Lifetime Canada, Cartoon Network Canada, Teletoon, YTV, History Canada, etc.). If Corus has the money, I could see them possibly being interested to strengthen their male appeal.

I also wonder if you cued see Bell holding some or the rights deals like the NFL where CTV and CTV 2 already show a lot of the games.

Yeah that guy is dreaming if he thinks a single entity owning everything is going to work out in favour of the consumer.

It literally never does. Corporations do not exist to make your life easier or pleasant, they are here to extract every dollar of value from you that they can.

And now more than ever they are doing it to us on a bloated ship that is sinking fast

Lucky Sens get 62 TSN games, and only 20 of the crap from Roger’s.

You don’t watch any games of the Jets, Leafs or Montreal on TSN.? Just the odd Senators one.

Condolences to you, having 82 Sportsnet games to deal with.

This. It's why I'm surprised bell isn't going after the next Canadian NHL contract for CTV.

All network TV is now is garbage reality TV and gameshows. The traditional shows worth watching are all streaming on "premium" services like Netflix, Amazon, HBO, etc.

There's a lotta worthless shit on TV these days that's easily replaceable. Maybe Global buys TSN and puts games on both networks, but it's something Bell should really consider themselves

I only watch oilers games. I live in Ottawa and because of it the Oiler vs sens game is on tsn.

Rsn does suck. Tsn was the best broadcaster but after losing out on the national rights in Canada I was surprised they stayed a float and still am. I made no value judgement on them.

I subscribe to sportsnet bullshit streaming that replace NHL Gamecenter so I can get whatever game I want. But my family's cable package with MTS includes TSN as part of basic, and has sportsnet in a separate package. I'll watch NFL and NCAA games on TSN, and Sportscenter is far better than whatever shit Sportsnet has

I would bet the number of viewers on a stream with blackout restrictions wouldn't offset the number of viewers on TV with blackout restrictions. Blackouts in streaming is prevents casual fans from tuning in. On TV anyone with the right package can view random games if they are interested.

Global is out, Corus Stock is basically penny stock.

Corus, owner of the Global Television Network, is working on a restructuring of its $1.05-billion in debt that could include the sale of the company, with noteholders receiving as little as a dime for every dollar in debt.
Corus Entertainment has a market cap or net worth of CAD 20.94 million as of December 2, 2024. Its market cap has decreased by -81.25% in one year.

Is there a relevant point you're trying to make here or are you just ranting nonsensically about blackouts when they're irrelevant to the topic of this thread?

My first thought was that -- Rogers purchases TSN, giving them access to more stations and ultimately more platforms.

That would also pretty much snuff out the main competition for the next NHL deal. Perhaps that would allow Rogers to partner with Amazon Prime exclusively.

I'm not sure the Canadian Competition Bureau would allow it.

Agree. Not sure who'll buy TSN.

Plus, how much do you think it is worth? I can't see it being worth too much.

BCE sure is getting lean and mean. I wish they had not overpaid for Ziply Fiber.

i don’t even know if I’d want to take on the new cfl commissioner job. TSN contract has kept the league a float and that could get slashed with how the tv landscape is going in Canada and now this news
The CFL provides TSN with a ton of cheap summer Canadian content. $50M/yr for 86 games at 3.5 hours / game isn't a huge worry for TSN.

*************************************************************

Perhaps BCE spins it off because, like I said, who would buy it?
