I gotta see more of Matthews before I comment. I'll watch his goal highlight video later on. I was shocked to see just how many goals Bedard scored from the high slot with that toe drag wrister into the upper left corner of the net. Of the 71 goals it looked like at least 40 were like that. The release and how quickly the puck ended up in the net were jaw dropping. If it wasn't for the goalie reaction you would never know where the puck even entered the net.

Watch those videos of Matthews posted earlier in this thread playing for the ZSC Lions, I think Matthews had a little more power but Bedard might be even more deceptive and have a quicker release. It's pretty close either way.

thanks, I'll definitely find that video and check it out. That release by Bedard is like nothing I've ever seen before.

Thanks, I just watched the video. Don't really see the comparison. Matthews' release seems a lot slower than Bedard. Shots didn't look similar to me. Bedard's seemed to have more oomph on them as well.

Can't wait till October when we can start seeing Bedard vs NHL goalies!

Well, I don't know. Matthews wristers had an insane amount of power behind them, combined with his size and his reach where he could pull it out of the way of the defender and get his shot off in traffic, and he finished tied for 2nd in goals in his rookie season with playing just over 17 minutes and 2 and half per game on the powerplay. It'll be incredible if Bedard could do something similar as an 18 year old with 20+ minutes and out there for most of their powerplay.

Will have to wait a year to compare to Matthew’s, as his first year was at 19.

Since it is a law of nature that the only thing saltier than the ocean in Vancouver is the fanbase, Bedard is going to be the best rookie goalscorer since Ovi. He's gonna break 50 goals this season, I feel it in my bones.

He’s on a really bad team at the moment. I can still see him putting up around ppg and at least 30 goals. The young man has a lot of talent and it’ll be exciting to watch him develop. Still bitter he’s a Hawk though.

1st half 13 - 11 - 24 .......adjusting to the league
2nd half 24 - 23 - 47 ......and never less than PPG for the next 10yrs

Lots of sky-high expectations.

Has anyone besides McDavid lived up to the hype in the last decade? More?

Every year it's the same thing, "this is the one"!!

Every year, around Christmas, we get a "is X a bust??"

If he goes 30/30, I think it would be considered a successful season.

I mean, there have been 5 players since 2000 that have scored more than 72 points in their rookie season. Two of them were Sid and Ovi in the same year.
Matthews did. Bedard is being labeled as a special type of player, so the expectations are matching that.

I guess 35-35 based on the roster, definitely more goals than assists if they're not even.

I think he'll get 33 goals and 30 assists for 63 points. Then in 24-25, he'll explode like an atomic bomb and get 100+

I’ve watched Bedard a lot and think he has the second best shot in the world already. 35 goals/70 points. I think he would be able to be PPG and 40+ goals if he were on a better team. He’s going to be the focus for both his team and his opponents every night starting immediately.

I think he'll get this anyway, on a really good team with prime offensive opportunity I think he would be getting 50 goals and 100 points.

True, but he has some decent talent around him, namely Hall and Jones. I think the offense will run through these three guys and the Hawks PP should be fun. It will be shades of rookie Lindros in Philly when it was pretty much him, Recchi, and Brind'Amour.

37 points in 40 games. Out for 42 games because Chucky suckers him Corey Perry style.

It’s a known thing that Matthews plays with a pretty short stick, so much of his advantage is negated there. When he does deke, it tends to be close into his body. Matthews does not play the way you describe.

Matthews uses his short stick to generate a ton of torque and flex on his wrist shot. It also is a huge advantage for his curl drag shot which he’s become famous for. He also tends to find dead space very well, and positions himself well to receive pucks in tight and utilize his quick hands. One thing he doesn’t get enough credit for is how completely unafraid he is to score dirty goals. If you watch his 60 goals, so many are from just outside the blue paint.

People have said that playing with a shorter stick leaves Matthews more vulnerable to hits and contact, and he does get dinged up as the season goes on.

Bedard also plays with a very long stick for his height, so I don’t think there’s a reach advantage there at all. I think much of Bedard reaching his potential will be determined by how he plays in traffic. I don’t see it as a concern, as Bedard is completely unafraid of traffic in his career this far. Whether his smaller frame will hold up in terms of health is the real question.

You are correct about Matthews and the short stick. I was thinking more along the lines of how he uses his body to protect the puck and how he curls it away from defenders before releasing his shot. He is also amazing at getting open and scoring dirty goals as you mention, it'll be interesting to see how Bedard does there. One thing for sure is he will be a better playmaker than Matthews, even though Mathhews is underrated as a passer himself.

L take from you like always. He had a beautiful goal taken away thanks to the beloved offsides challenge yesterday
It was a question, not a take. I'm not concerned, I think he'll be one of the best in the league. But I'm not sold he's a 100+ point rookie like many thought.
