I can’t say I’ve noticed him much, but that’s a good thing for OL. If he’s really a strong lt going forward, that’s awesome for a 5th round pick.
Disclaimer: I'm not a talent evaluator, especially on the nuances of OL play - so other than my eyeball evaluation of watching the game on TV - which is basically in keeping with the bolded above - my opinion on Braxton Jones is formed from listening to the opinions of NFL guys who know a whole lot more than I do on the topic.
And ... I've heard nothing but good things from them about Braxton Jones, some effusive in their opinion. There is consensus that he has all the measurables and athleticism a LT needs to be not just good but very good or even great, but he needs to get more lower body strength to counter the best bull rush moves. The fact that he came from a small college with a strength and conditioning program nowhere near what NFL teams have gives cause to believe Jones can add the strength to become that very good LT - IF - he's committed to putting in the work to get there. So here is the 2nd piece of evidence to suggest he will become the long term answer at LT for the Bears - those "in the know" NFL guys believe he has the proper attitude to take coaching and work hard at improving.
If Jones can be that long term LT - that is huge for the rebuilding of not just the o-line but the entire team. Not only does it mean you have one of the most important positions set, but it means you don't have to spend resources to get one, meaning those resources can be spent on other needs.
So, being optimistic, let's say Jones is the answer at LT - and Teven Jenkins is the answer at right guard - that still leaves 3 OL positions to fill. Maybe Leatherwood shows he can be one of those guys either where he is currently at RT or possibly at left guard - that still leaves 2 OL positions to fill. Most likely Whitehair won't be back but what about Patrick at center? Injuries may say not, but were his injuries more fluky than long term concerns? I don't know.
