It's trying to be smarter not singing a guy you can know is seeking to be a top 10 paid guard not really top 10 worthy? Also undersized as was a notable issue here.

Seems weird to pull some 5 month old offseason signing post to make some random jump to points when the 1st thing you see Googling the guy is articles he's been bad at camp and in the preseason for Pittsburgh.

Well, someone in the Steelers-signing-Daniels twitter thread mentioned that even Poles said FAs get overpaid in justifying the dollar terms for one of his own "average" (in that poster's opinion) FA acquisitions.

If Daniels is overpaid by Pitt, it's not by that much, because that 5-month old article I referenced states: "In his first four seasons, the athletic interior offensive lineman never once graded out worse than the 20th best player at his position, according to Pro Football Focus. The tape would back this up, as he appeared to be the lone bright spot on a struggling Bears offensive line."

Undersized? I vaguely remember that label was attached to Daniels when he was drafted. But how is a 6'4 320+ lbs guard/center undersized? Olin Kreuz was undersized, as was Casey Wiegmann. Not every interior O-lineman is a 6'7 Kyle "holding king" Long who can't cut it as a tackle and had to slide inside. Most aren't. To me, Daniels seems the prototypical size for a guard.

Is Tevan Jenkins "lighter" and "quicker" and objectively better than Daniels? Because, the former is starting on the OL inside for the Bears now. Don't know anything about Lucas Patrick, Poles' new FA OL toy, except he's hurt all pre-season.

As far as Daniels' performance in the Steelers' pre-season, I'm sure his agent would point you to the tapes of the last 4 regular seasons+1 playoff game.

Edit: Interestingly, on the Halas Intrigue podcast concerning the last pre-season game, one of the hosts was going on and on about concerns over David Montgomery (because Fields has the option to scramble or pass) running behind this O-line, sans Daniels of course. The host even explicitly said that the return of Lucas Patrick (C) by the season opener is just one guy. What point am I trying to "jump" to here?

Eberflus must still have an ear toward Indy since the Colts were hoping to stash Weatherford on their practice squad. They really liked him but apparently he's not a special teams guy and they need their bottom of the roster to be special teams players since their kickoff specialist is out for the season.

Apparently, the word on Leatherwood is that he hasn't developed much, not quick enough to play tackle, not big enough to play guard, and has trouble with snap counts? Good luck with that.
Maybe end up being true about Leatherwood. But in his defense he's has three head coaches, two different o-line coaches, won the Outland as a LT and was thrown into play RT and moved to RG when the Raiders had injuries. So his brief one year plus in the NFL hasn't been the most stable of times. For a rookie that can definitely be detrimental to their development.

Bears also picked up Kellen Diesch OT from the Dolphins; an UDFA that Miami had cut and was hoping to sign to their ps. Apparently Diesch graded as the best pass blocking o-lineman in the Shrine Bowl, fwiw.

I watched a fair amount of Raiders football last year. Leatherwood is a drive killer, either by taking a penalty or missing an assignment.

I'll be impressed if the Bears coaching staff molds him into something useful.

The fact that the Bears think 6 FAs can come in and out play 6 guys who were in camp does not say good things about their confidence in their players or the talent level of the team.

I have the Bears winning 5 to 8 games. I don't think this is a bottom 5 team.
Most of this is based on Fields working with Getsy. I'm slowly coming around on him.

This is not close to the finished product.
If this team wins 4 games I’ll be surprised.
I thought everyone know that coming in. That is why they use all the dead cap now. I think they are hoping for a top 3 pick next year.

8 wins? I don’t see it. O line is not good. Fields needs to get reps and avoid death.
High picks next year and a lot of free agent money should make the 23 season a lot better.

I don't think the OL is going to be as terrible as most think. It's pretty young and talented, but raw.

If they hire a football person as president (which they should IMO) what would that mean for Poles and Eberflus? Timing is shitty. Phillips should have retired last year so this conflict didn't happen. You know new football guy will want his own people running the show.

Unless, they make Poles the football guy and just hire a new business ops person.
