I have seen a couple mocks on ESPN with them drafting sanders 6OA. Why can’t that happen?
It definitely can, but that would also mean that 3 extremely QB needy teams that are nowhere near competing and needs a QB of the future in the Titans, Browns, and Giants all passed on him.

Even if one of those teams think highly enough of him that they would have drafted him if not for Ward, it's still not a great sign, IMO.

It might happen though. I'm not getting the impression that people are particularly high on Sanders.

Don't forget the Sanders camp is trying to pull an Eli Manning. Quite frankly, Sanders isn't worth the headache. I hope the NFL let him fall out of the first round.

Teams always get super desperate for a QB in the draft. Assuming Ward goes 1 OA that leaves Cleveland and the Giants as an option to take him at 2/3. I'm not sure the vibe with Cleveland but I can definitely see the Giants drafting him.

Also makes prime trade candidates for NE and Jacksonville at 4/5 for someone who wants to jump up. Given how weak of a QB class this is I could definitely see a team trading to jump ahead of the Raiders to take him. While I'm not a fan of him or his dad and the circus they'll bring with him, I'd imagine he's going to have a ton of hype built on him leading into the draft because that's just kind of what they do.

I could see a team like the Jets or Saints jumping up in the draft from 7th and 9th spots. Maybe even the Seahawks if they can offer enough other goods along with the 18th OA pick.

I always forget that the franchise tag period lasts for several weeks.

If Smith gets tagged, how comfortable do we feel with Dalman + Zeitler + Rookie on the interior?

I feel like that should provide at least an average IOL year 1. In that case, it will just have to be a work in progress.

Think zeitler will be a target regardless of smith: dalman makes sense also.

But the answer is the man the myth the legend Ryan bates

On the one hand, the Bears save $4M against the cap by cutting him.

On there other hand, Bates is a potentially mediocre swing guard/center who may provide below average play when/if he's not injured because of his arthritic shoulder.

Who needs $4M anyway?

Related to roster cuts, I've seen some speculation that Byard is a cut candidate because of his contract. That feels completely asinine to me, given that Brisker is, at best, a hopeful to actually play a full season, and there is nothing else in the pipeline for safety.

Do they have the cap space to even do that?

What if Kelce retires?
They gain $17M to play with if Kelce retires, in which case I think they tag Smith.

Otherwise... I really don't know. Maybe they do a transition tag hoping that someone else signs him? They have a couple of other players who need signing too. But if they want Smith, they will find a way to keep him. I assume you can do a lot of magic to push Mahomes $66M cap hit to a later date.

Drafting a RB at 10 would be incredibly stupid, so I'm sure Poles is thinking about it.

I don't know... Free agency begins in early March so we'll have a good idea of what the offensive line looks like come draft day. Let's say they get Trey Smith and Dalman and Johnson goes to Poles and says draft Jeanty.

Do you tell him no? I wouldn't.

You don't bring in a coach like this and pay him all this money and then not give him the players he wants to work with.

The Chiefs are not expected to place the franchise tag or the transition tag on Smith, according to a league source.

It doesn't really make any sense to me to say the offensive line is the most important area to address, but then not tag Smith but what do I know I'm just a meatball Bears fan.

Can't give him a contract he won't agree with, and franchise tagging him gives you by far the highest paid guard in the league because the franchise tag counts him as an OL, not an IOL.

I think if he walks it comes down to how they simply can't afford him.

With the big bump (~$26 mil) in salary cap space this year, it certainly gives the Chiefs a better chance of re-signing him. L Dickerson is currently the highest paid guard, signing last year for $21 mil per. But as that article pointed out, KC has a few key holes they need to plug this off-season.

Quentin Nelson of the Colts make $20 mil per year too. Thats a lot of money for guards.
