Barzal unhappy with Fan Support/Attendance at UBS Arena

Time for Lou to go, Barzal and friends to get traded, and the Isles to do a rebuild. I guess there's value in being a playoff bubble team from a October-April entertainment standpoint for a few years but that time is ending. Feels like Devils of 2013-15. That season with Jagr and all the shootout losses was actually really fun to watch but then when it ended I was like "Yeah, this team loses in 5 in the first round if it made it"

I'd say $200 is a lowball if they're including concessions.

Feel like concessions is dumb. I may pay $6 for your damn water just because 3 hours is a long time without drinking, but damn if I'm hungry enough to eat a $12 hot dog.

I recently found in Detroit that they take the cap off your water and don't let you keep it.

1. Doesn't seem like the best idea to keep germs from spreading.

2. Seems like a great way to make more money on $6 waters when you inevitably spill it in their cramped ass seats.

There should be no shame put upon fanbases for not turning up to watch their team play shit when the costs are exorbitant.
I particularly respect the passion of Oilers and Leafs fans that kept shelling out top dollar to watch their organisation's dire efforts a while back but the fans money wasn't deserved by the teams.
Attendance is just too costly and has been for a long while. I get it, it's supply and demand, but pricing out average fans in favour of corporate tickets so the millionaires and billionaires can get that bit richer is a sad price to pay in the grand scheme of things.

Depends what you wanna do!

Already looking at doing a summer trip. Flight out to Calgary to go to Banff is dirt cheap. It's the vehicle rental that might kill me.
that legitimately surprises me, though I doubt the accommodations out there would be all that cheap.

I'd say $200 is a lowball if they're including concessions.
yeah, $200 is the tickets and maybe the parking. Zero chance that's including concessions in just about any market at this point.

At first I was going to make a joke about how players calling out their fans typically goes great. But it's clear in the OP this is something Barzal said to a teammate on the bench when he had no idea a camera was on him.

And it's based on someone thinking that's what he said by reading his lips.

That's much, much different.

One way right now is looking at about $135 to go from Chicago to Calgary. Straight shot, no connections or layovers.

Granted, you gotta pay to check bags.

NHL tickets today are too expensive for me to criticize fans for not showing up to watch a bad/mediocre team.

Like people have bills to pay and going to a game with your family is likely going to cost around like $200.
This is the issue. Everything has spiked up in costs meanwhile tone deaf sports leagues look to make bigger profits. Could care less about blue collar fans and panhandle to the corporate side which means a lot of the fans in seats are not as invested or even show up.

Then to top it off the league is copy cat and the Coaches and rules/officials suffocate offense the one thing left to cheer for.

Maybe Horvat can tell everyone "for free" that his boring suffocating risk averse team and others should try thinking about the entertainment value and stop blaming fans

The oilers were historically bad for over 10 years and still packed the building. Never sent a message to ownership that its not okay. At least Isles fans sit it out and get the owners where it hurts.
Idk if it has anything to do with messages.

TBH it's kind of an oddball date/time. In the past, Islander home games on MLK Day (it's a US holiday) are early games - 3pm or 5pm because kids are off school. That usually boosts numbers. But inauguration, which is always on 1/20 (well, every 4 years at least to date), happened to fall on the holiday. So maybe the game was scheduled so as not to interfere?

I work, have school age kids & coach, so I don't have time to go to many games. But I would 100% have gone to a 3pm game yesterday.

As for Barzal - who cares? He can gripe if he wants so long as he plays hard.

Come over to Edmonton Matt. We have awesome crowd attendance and might just be able to help you get a Stanley Cup.

Just kidding, your contract sucks.

It is a really nice new arena with some actual character to it, proper sponsorships/corporate support, and a solid place to see a game that is actually properly served by transit.

So my response to Barzal is respect your fans, and they will respect you.

The problem with the Islanders play style is the way they give up tons of goals in the 3rd period. It's true that NYI powerplays are boring, but that is ... not by design.

Can you tell us how you really feel

Wings fan. Don't really have any emotional feeling at all toward it. Just laughing at an overpaid lackluster player bitching about fan attendance when they're not paying because it's not worth the money to see him.

Tough for the Islanders. Not only are they 2nd in their own city, but a third team is located in Newark that could otherwise help attract a fanbase. Not sure how it goes in other sports, but upstate New York having a team in Buffalo could also take a few otherwise fans.

Basically they're in a huge city but functionally a small market team. It's a weird situation.

Buffalo isn't taking anyone's fans. It's about 6.5 hours by car from Buffalo to the Islanders neck of the woods. There are 7 other teams closer than that (including the Rangers and Devils). Hell, it's closer to drive from the UBS to Capital One arena in DC.

If you play better, they will come. Any other arenas struggle in attendance last night with the national championship excuse and is Inauguration Day that big of a day when it was earlier that day? and the game was a few hours later?

The only person on the Islanders that might do something entertaining during a game is Roy. That being said I think if they spend 1st+ on another 32 year old grinder, that should put some asses in seats.
